| 'Lo Steve,
I get carried away at times, it's the old codger, or Smart Arse syndrome ! I had fraulein troubles too, once, but mine knew EVERYTHING. Told her to be careful with the mustard once when she came over to UK, she sneered, she was a world traveller. Put too much on and nearly took the top off her head. Another time she went shopping for a ballpoint pen...... thought we called the "Bics", but got mixed up & asked the chap behind the counter if he had a Prick. Wondered why we both collapsed laughing. Nice girl, but another Smart Arse!

| When i married Miss Right i didnt realise her first name was Always !!!! As it happens mine is a super map reader. i much prefer her to a sat nav acrually. i showed her the basics, as we were taught in the army, and she understood it straight away and could "see it" as it were. No worries Cartav, at 81 you can be as grumpy as you like. i am only a smart arse young sprog. 59 today. | |

| To-day we are off to Oma's Schnitzel Stube, very, very German. Just out side of Winnipeg for lunch. It will be a bit of a trip down memory lane. We'll be with a Berliner, two Mennonite ladies and myself, the Canadian interloper. I shall enjoy this and pig out. I know Hochdeutsch and Plats Deutsch will be spoken, so I shall attempt to listen and behave my self.

| In Hemer they used to put up signs saying "Feier Abend" (did I spell that right ?).
Was that the same thing, auf Kanada ?

| I do believe so. When I was posted in Delinghofen/Hemer, Iserlohn they posted some thing like this
Gershlosen Tag
Been awhile since I saw the sign. But I was so set for a pork schnitzel. Four very dissapointed people. Ah well next month we'll regroup and attack again.
Nice going Shelldrake, on the sign. That's the place

| Not so long ago, this Fraulein I was spending time quality time with took me too a Weinfest in a small village in the Pfalz. Great stuff, they'd closed the main street, lined it with tents & things where eats & drinks were on offer. an Oompah Band thumped away for dancers.
Fraulein says "You will fetch the drink, I shall find a seat " Very Deutsch, I didn't argue but joined the queue at a suitable outlet. Sign behind counter says "Bier 3 DM Weiss wein 3DM". I ordered one of each. Man serving, busy and stressed, says " 9 DM", I argued best I could . He looks me in the eye and spits out "Pfand !" which sounds a bit like Kraut for go away & multiply, bloody Englander. Distressed, I recount my tale to my companion, who sneers at my tale and snorts "Pfand !" too. First time I'd come across the expression, but here it was twice in five minutes. I'd learnt some more Deutsch, I now knew a word for the deposit on the glasses.

So who was speaking plat deutsch then hardrations? That would have been my wife and her friend ( friends husband is a Berliner so unfamiliar with Low German) and others we would hear in the Stube. Low German is still quite common with the older generation of Mennonites here in Manitoba. When attending church my wife is usually into Low German mode on meeting friends same at funerals. Our early service is usually in English with some High German. In other Mennonite churches early service is in High German. Mennonites in Mexico mostly speak Low German even in church services. Mennonites in Brazil and Paraguay are familiar with both High and Low German. Low German is a language of it's own and is very close to Dutch. Until recently it wasn't a written language. My wife can usualy follow about 60% if a Dutch conversation.
