| Gordon,
You would have had to serve with some of these NS fellows to have known their character. At least they did their time, knowing they were going to get out after a couple of years AND most of them took it in their stride. Mad men of a lot of them.

Must say I havn't really noticed them in Lidl but will pop round today and have a look see. Update - Aldi was only store which stocked Weiner Schnitzel. Bought two packs and some salad potato and had a great meal. The actual schnitzel was a bit thicker than we used to get in Germany, but hey who's moaning.

Never knew about this late extension....... can't believe they'd be required to do an extra six months over the the normal 2 years without something going through Parliament . So reckon that, being some of the very last NS intakes, they'd been told to expect early release, believed it & then found that such a move was an incovenience to the Army. Back to nosh & things.......Conner some of our war service regs. called it. Is that still Army speak?. We had a Christmas Market in the town centre, getting a bratwurst was a must. Big stall, all signed up in Deutsch, oompah band on tape deck, and lanky blonde behind counter turned out in Tracht, that Bavarian trad kit, but keeping warm under a non-traditional anorak. Came to halt, clicked heels, ordered a Bratwurst and asked "Bitte, gnadiges Fraulein, woher kommen Sie?" "Yer wot, chuck?" she grinned, "Sorry I don't speak that stuff....... I'm from Manchester". Illusion was shattered but they did have German mustard for the Bratwurst.

I have to admit to not being 100% certain myself, it is just something that is stuck in my memory from reading labels way back when. Didn`t stop me eating them, of course, after all meat is meat.

Just as troops in the British Army believed their tea was laced with bromide, and bully beef was affectionately known as corned dog, those of the Wehrmacht were convinced there was horsemeat in the Frikadellen. The rumour passed into home front folklore. There is no reason to doubt that horsemeat never found its way into the field kitchen Goulasch Kanone and it may well have been an ingredient introduced in an emergency. But with the German army more dependent on horses as prime movers than other major combatants, horses were far too valuable to be used as a regular part of the daily diet. Not so with canines. It was quite acceptable for dog meat to end up in the stew pot and the term "Schweinhund" was coined to refer both to a rotter and to a pork substitute. Tommies in World War 1 called the Dachshund the German sausage dog though there is no record of this breed being singled out to become a field ration supplement.
