| Prefer a Wiener Schnitzel to a currywurst mit pommes, especially with mayonaise Kartoffel. Don't forget a slice of lemon. | |

Jim, have you ever tried the Wiener Schnitzel from Lidl? I see them and often think I'll get one and try it. I do buy the Frikadeln from there.

| [quote="Shelldrake"]Plastic beakers and Euros now, Cartav.
'Lo Shelldrake ! Sorry for the delay, think I've been targeted for electronic warfare to shut me up............ Back on net now.
Ah! Yes...... But maybe things were done more slowly in the Pfalz and they'd not caught up with edicts from Brussels. Anyway, I'm reminded I still have a 10 Pfennig piece wrapped up in a 6d BAFV note, memorabilia from when I wore khaki for the day job, when there were 12 DM to £1 and before I'd taken up the favourite sport of long-distance fornication. And when we got just £1 a week after stoppages, 6d was a lot of brass ! Clever lot those Germans..... never had the expense of changing all their coinage at frequent intervals like as wot we did.
Another food orientated bit...... Scene : Bar in Hameln area, two of us slurping a beer to wash down a Kotelett. Some of the mob doing similar stuff at the far end, one innocent at the bar trying to get through an order in the few words he'd learnt. Baffled, he asked for assistance.
Bar lady asks for confirmation of his order. Does he want one serving of oxtail soup (Ochsenschwanzsuppe) or is he ordering 28 (Achtundzwanzig Suppe) for him & his mates ? He was one of ours, so we didn't play an expensive trick on him.

| Congrats Jim Sigs ! Only good thing about making 80 is all the candles on the cake allow you to turn off the central heating ...... I seem to remember !
But I had an anniversary too this week,,,,,,,,, Release day for 54.08 Group was 20 April. Two years of crossing dates off the demob calendar ended ! Now THAT was a reason for celebration ! Funny thing was that three weeks before, the Adj had me in to say I was on the advance party for the move back to UK and told I was getting a third stripe. Didn't realise I was a conscript, you see. Confusion all round, mad dash to stop it going up on Part 1's or it would have been the shortest time in the rank on record. And what was even funnier was that, in truth and although the pay was crap and the food was nothing to write home about, I'd enjoyed a lot of it........ But not enough to sign on !

| I would put the fatal time earlier than that Jim, the blokes who received the Kiss of Death were outraged, as well they might. As a "Thick Regular" I felt for them. I wonder which meathead in the Warbox conjured THAT one up ?
The absence of NS left gaps in the ranks that caused a lot of stress to those left to take up the slack.
Morale took a dive, to say the least.

I bet they were chuffed ! Don't recall anything like that, but I do have a mate who was in a late intake in the early 1960's and was sent home early because there wouldn't have been time to complete his tech training....... I think !
And up until about 1950 the NS lads only did 18 months, then the Korean bother put a stop to that and the term of service was extended to 2 years..... To recompense these unfortunates there was regular pay for the last 6 months...... Great stuff ! With around two quid a week nett. you could afford to have an egg with the nightly chips & beans at the NAAFI>
Other than that, time in detention didn't count, We had one lad who thought he' never go home. As soon as he came out he had a celebratory drink or two and was soon back in again.

| National Servicemen, great bunch of blokes. We could not have manned Berlin Airlift, Korea, Malaya, Kenya, Suez, Cyprus, West Indies etc etc without them. I know that when I left Harrogate as an Owl BIII, it was only in theory. The practical side of things I learnt from the NS blokes in the troop I was posted to in 1952. I always remember a NS Sgt coming down to LCpl to be discharged. What a waste having trained these fellows only to see them go back to civvy street. That's my twopenny worth. | |
