I was one of the first to get the Asian 'flu at Hereford, Lesty. There I was, reporting sick, clutching my small pack. Temp of 104 (scared the shit out of the medics !). Within a week the gymnasium was full of beds and most of the regiment was laid up. Nasty, that 'flu.

| Lesty "Done something wrong i could not reply on private message"Sorry. I can remember one place on the corner where the trams went into the city centre. Did you ever use a gaust haus or pub,it was from the traffic lights walking towards the city (the trams ran in the middle)and it was on the right hand side, a few minutes walk down, we went there often "it seems no one found it"or knew it was there. The traffic lights was near to the stonk club. Alan | |

| As mentioned elsewhere, I attended school in Dortmund for a year, at Cornwall Comprehensive (now known as the Europa School, I guess).
I remember the soccer pitch and other parts of school property, quite extensive actually, backed onto one of the barracks in Dortmund, but I don't know which one. I do remember it had a NAAFI. We weren't really supposed to go there during school hours or at lunch but of course many did, especially Prefects who went anywhere we damn well pleased!! (we thought).
I don't think the barracks beside Cornwall School were West Riding...pretty sure they weren't. I seem to recall it was Napier, but I could be wrong....hell, wouldn't be the first time on that score!
I do remember going to the NAAFI with my best pal, Derek Wilkinson, and purchasing a couple of cans of Guinness stout each and secreting them in the large pockets of our school blazers for later consumption. So far, so good.
Unfortunately, and rather stupidly, we jogged back to school. Upon opening the cans of Guinness in one of the class rooms we were, of course, immediately sprayed with a dark foam because the can had been agitated by us jogging. Dumb kids LOL. Damn stuff went all over the desks, us, the floor, spraying everything in a 2 foot radius! And reeked!!!!!
One of the girls had some sort of cream perfume, a sachet or whatever it's called, and we rubbed that into the wood desks to try and cover the aroma of Guinness. Just so ya know.... it doesn't work!! You end up with the smell of Guinness and the waft of something called Evening Passion or whatever. Damn class room smelled like a cheap bordello (not that Derek or I would have known what that was like or anything...I don't think any of us did at that stage of our lives).
Teacher comes in, sniffs...sniffs again....and asks what on earth was that?
This was back in the days when if Sir asked you a question, you answered directly and truthfully. So we did. Totally fessed up.
Luckily for us, this was one of the younger teachers....early 20's, not much older than us really....he thought it hilarious, although did warn us we shouldn't be doing things like buying Guinness and bringing it back onto school property...Headmaster would take a very dim view of it. Other than that, no consequences...whew! Or, yes, there was one consequence; the remaining cans of Guinness were confiscated. Well, I imagine he had a nice pint at home later!!

Stephen, the Barracks behind Cornwall School was Redesdale Bks which was home to a REME Workshops the entrance to which was accessed on the road to Aplerbeck. The next Barracks along from Cornwall was Ubique followed by Moore and then West Riding Bks round the corner on the way to Do-Hoerde. Suffolk Bks housed the Families NAAFI and the RMP Duty Room, Napier Bks was on the other side of town.

| I have been on Google Earth to Dortmund and clicked on the year 1943 and shows, West Riding Brks, Moore Brks. Ubique Brks near to each other but Napier Brks is some distance away...We used to march from West Riding Brks to camp 7 i think it was Suffolk Brks for church parade....I also believe there was a Naffi and Shop and a Cinema, the Sgts Married Living Quaters was also close by........Steve, the school could have been there also............Alan B | |

| Alan, Napier Bks was situated in Do-Brackel. It was originally a Luftwaffe airfield until occupied by the Royal Artillery

| Hi Shelldrake,
Very interesting about the bunkers in Dortmund. Didn't know about these when I was in Germany 1952-4 & 1962-6, but then perhaps they were not open to the public then.

I was in the first room when you went into the Brks through the side door,in the room were two Army Pay Corps also worked upstairs i think (can't remember names though).AlanB..

I read lots of items on here about Napier and West Riding but nary a word about Redesdale and very little about Ubique or nothing about Moore that I can remember. This certainly explains why when I look at pics of Napier etc none of it rang a bell!!! It was because what I was looking for wasn't Napier Bks....well, that makes bit of difference, doesn't it?? :-) Ta!
