...thought I was losing it there, what I can remember of them... very scruffy and couldn't march for a toffee, just didn't seem interested. The pool, if I remember correctly, was metal skinned. Hence when they kept'd throwing the cannon in it would put a split in the skin.... wh

Do u remember the swimming pool next to the track? I suspect thyey were Tankies from Augustdorf, we were twinned with 21 Panzer I think.
Dave, I remember the swimming pool now, funny how you get these holes in your memory isn't it. Easily done, When we went back in 2004 it was filled in.... . It also had a long, foot deep, section at the shallow end. seem to remember arched showers over it. Do you remember the tv repairman being at the back of the cinema?

| Hmm Can't say I remember a TV repair man, I do remember the MRS was near the rear gate, that was the place they told my Wife she still had a month to go before our Son was born, the same evening we were screaming down the Autobahn to Rinteln and the boy was born that night. | |

Hi Jim, Your correct about the German Troops, 21st Panzer Brig from Augustdorf - found info on 9/12th website Yes they were "allied" with 20 Armd Bde and quite often we would call on them to pull our 432's out if they threw a track on the training area. Their recovery tanks (leopards?) seemed to have no bother. We actually went down there to play with some tanks once and left our 432 in their wash point. Obviously thought it would be very funny to stick a high pressure hose down our exhaust while we were away. I can still remember the pack lift and the REME guys trying to start it outside the vehicle. Water gushed out everywhere. That was fun, NOT!

| Lived in Detmold in the early to middle 50's dad was a tankie, 4D hindenburg str, went to have a look a few years ago, it was still there, although Hobart bks was no longer. It happens that my first posting was Hobart Bks in 1968/69, 71a/c wksp, still have nightmares about that unit, hated every minute of it, still, after several 'faux pas' they sent me on my way right quick! funny when I think about it now, at the time , not so much. As it happens fate has been more than kind to me over the years, so cant complain. Ian. | |

| Just doing a bit of research about Hobart Barracks. I was there with REME 4 Armd 68 / 69. I don't think the photo showing the tank is a Conquerer though, I was in the last group from SEE trained on the Conq, which wasn't really a tank but a self propelled gun. No real gun stability and liable to turn turtle if fired over the side.
I pulled duty NCO on two weekends whilst there and managed on both occasions to put the REME flag upside down when I put it out on the Sunday morning. I thought it looked quite good with the horse ballancing the World whilst standing on its head. I guess I was the only one who did though. Had to take it down to stop it getting nicked at night. I seem to remember the REME duty office being just inside to the right as you went through the 'front gates'
I keep meaning to come back to see if the 'Clock Lights' are still on the cross roads, they were a constant source of worry. I thought the town was attractive with the paintings on the buildings, certainly better that either Iserlohn or Munster my other postings

I was also a kid living in Stauffenburg Strasse during that time. (71-75) House Number 5C, opposite the grassy area next to the swings. So we must have been neighbors. My dad was also working in the Sgts Mess (I think it was the Sgts Mess), but he was with REME. Would that be right? We used to pass it on our right on the way to the pool. My mates and I spent every day in that pool during the summer, when we weren't at the riding stables, that is! That pool was bloody cold!

| Hello there,
My Father was stationed in Detmold when I was about 3 or 4.
From what I can remember the Married quarters were across the road form the camp, up a small hill......is that right?
I'm sure we used to live in a small block of flats on the right hand side as you go up the hill.
The block of flats was in full view of the camp??
If I am right, I think it was when my Dad was in 3RHA?.
Any information you can give me would be gratefully received.
Thank you. | |
