Yep, 9th Lancers. I was attached to there from Minden. Had a very cushy number charging batteries. No guard duties, no parades, even lived in the battery-charging place, no inspections either! Work denims always full of holes, though, from little splashes of battery acid.....

I was in Detmold from '65 to '68 with 71A/C Wksps. Tiny Davies was OC at the back end and Frank Penfold the Adj. I married in '66 and lived in a private hiring in Karl Strasse, (first left after the swinging tit lights) until I got a pad and moved out to Elsen nr Schloss Neuhaus and Paderborn. I believe the Blues & Royals were there initially, followed by 3 Carbs. 3 RHA and 4 Armd Wksps were also there. The AAC Club was, originally, the Cpls Mess, in the cellar. The airstrip was one of the coldest places you'd want to be. When it rained it turned to ice and covered the cars so you needed a lighter to melt the door lock, just to get the key in. The Half Way House was a regular drop-in for a rest after walking up the hill. Mutte's was one of the regular hangouts for us, only small, but very friendly.

Remember the airstrip well. I was the documents clerk with 4 Field Workshops REME in 1974 (4 Armoured Workshops REME having been retitled to 4 Field Workshops REME). 1 RHA had replaced 3 RHA. I had a flat in Londoner Strasse which was up the hill after going out of the rear of the barracks. My first son was born in Rinteln whilst I was in Detmold. It was also my shortest posting by distance as I moved from being the documents clerk in 4 Field to being the LAD clerk in 1 RHA which was about 200 yards from 4 Field. Was also there the night that the Cpls Mess which was at that time above the cookhouse, burnt down. It certainly lit up the night sky.

'Wetmold' was my last posting in 1982. I had been with 4ADSR in Herford, and with just 2 years left to serve I requested a posting to SW District. REME Records claimed that Detmold was the nearest they could get me! Yeah. Right.
So I joined the QOH. Clearly they didn't think much of me because they upped and left after 8 months and in came 4/7 DG. I was with them for about 18 months before my time was up.
I must have made a better impression there, because I am still in touch with some of the lads from there and meet up with them and many of the now RDG guys in Warminster.
