| I can remember one occasion in the NAFFI shop in Montgomery Bks Berlin When a couple of wives were bitching in German about a newer member who had just started working in the shop.The lady in question just smiled at them and proceeded to answer their comments about her in quite clear German as she was also a German national who had married one of the soldiers. Embarrassment all around.  | |

| I have to be careful in using German around my area of Winnipeg as I live in an area that has a large population of German/Mennonites. My wife quite often is using her Platt Deutsch or High German hear in our building. | |

Also be careful around Yiddish speaking people, they speak High German too. I found that out when I was posted in the, " Occupied Sinai Desert" in 75. The older Israeli's tended to speak German if they couldn't speak in English to me. Had to deal with an Israeli fuel truck driver one day. He was saying I must be from Dortmund as I spoke with a Dortmund accent. I accused him of being from Hamburg as he had a Hamburg accent. We were both wrong. I was born in Canada he was born in Russia. He was a Bergen-Belsen survivor who had no interest in going back to Russia in 45 so lived in Hamburg until 49 when he immigrated to Israel. | |
