| I seem to remember a notice that was supposed to be displayed behind all bars in BFG to the effect that spirits could only be sold in single measures! Hilarious. | |

| Dunno about Oxtail soup, but I remember a thick, kind of green pea soup we ate with dry bread! sounds bloody awfull doesn't it lol, honestly it was lovely, we lapped it up.
Actually, the fact that we were usually pissed when we scoffed this particular feast may have had a lot to do with it... | |

| Good link that. Ah, ye olde days. Some of you dinosaurs would still have a Ferguson B&W TV would you not? I left UK in late 1966 to emigrate to Australia. My first trip back to UK was in 2002, 36 years later. This idiot thought everything would be as he remembered dear olde England was in 1966. WRONG ! I had a rude shock, Motorways, inc M25, McDonalds, Self serve petrol stations, etc, etc. Some of the towns I lived in during the 50's and 60's I revisited in 2002, crikey, I could not recognise some of the places, just expanded and old buildings knocked down etc. When I left UK, I think we sold our house in Northampton for £3000. God knows what it would be worth these days. But then inflation hits every where. I purchased our first house in Sydney in 1974 when I got married, paid $30,000. Sold it 6 years ago to move down south, for $500,000. That is inflation for you. |

| I remember the first colour television I saw...Panasonic I think....and my mom's reaction was "Tsk...what's the point?" Mind you, at least here in North America, most tv shows were still done in B&W so it really was rather pointless, but a few cutting edge types started taping in colour!
NBC, I think it was, even had a peacock as their mascot (the tail fanned out in all these colours...6 or something, whoopee!).
What I recall is the quality of the colour. Quite washed out actually. And one had to fiddle around with a bunch of dials down below the screen to get the skin tones just right....most sets had the dials set so that the skin tones were a florid purple or a sickly greenish hue! Even those 'techies' able to strike the right balance of tint and hue never quite got it right and the skin tones ended up a sort of washed out peach with a touch of red.
At that time, still, the 'test pattern' was this rather cool graphic featuring the head of an Indian Chief in profile with various circles and bars and lines around it in various shades of black, grey and white...not much use on the new-fangled colour sets. So a coloured screen of solid colour bars was instituted. Just not the same.
Now, understand I was a rather odd boy (no comments out there in the peanut gallery, if you please!!) and remember for years I wanted to get my hands on a copy of the old Indian Chief test pattern as I thought, even as a child, the graphics of it were pretty damn cool....still do! A piece of technological art that nobody realized was as good as it was. Surprised it never became a Pop Culture poster or whatever!
Some sets were huge, set into a massive cabinet with folding doors across so that, when closed, it was this huge piece of furniture. Bulky as all get out. I also remember some sort of magnifier screen one could attach to the front of the set since, despite the set being massive, the screens were relatively small, even in the higher end models. Problem with those was they distorted the images, especially if you were off to the side and viewing it that way. A parallax effect....very distracting.

| Johnboy Military prisons, or correctly named Military Corrective Training Centres, were staffed by members of the Military Provost Staff Corps (MPSC) part of the Provost Branch under the control of the Provost Marshall (Army). | |
