"Sprog " not heard that word in a long time Methinks "Nig" predates "Sprog". Then, of course there's "Rawarse".

| Jimsigs, they both have 7 flames, its the central part that is different - the RE version is smooth. | |

| Shelldrake, I have a copy of a book called 'Royal Engineers' an illustrated history of the Corps of Royal Engineers by Gerald Napier. On page 241 under the heading Symbols and Songs, there are a couple of small photos of embroided badges. This is what it says : An embroided grenade was first worn on the tail of an RE Officers full dress scarlet coatee in 1824. The following year a brass grenade was introduced for other ranks of the Royal Sappers and Miners. The grenade was later worn on the epaulet and then on the collar. The number of flames to the grenade has varied, but in 1922 a nine-flamed grenade, with the motto 'Ubique' below it was authorised. The Royal Artillery grenade is similar, but has ONLY seven flames.

Having served with both Gunners & Sappers, ( together with a brief and very confusing six months with the Royal Sigs before they threw me out), I can vouch for the nine RE flames & seven RA flames on the grenades. From the bits I still hoard, and over which I shed a nostalgic tear from time to time, collar dog grenades are only worn by RA in No. 1 Dress, & there is no "Ubique" below the bomb. And I'm not certain about this, but I seem to remember that only RE wore grenades on Mess Dress lapels, and these had a "Ubique" on a blue background below the bomb.
