Subject: Windsor Schools, Hamm 25/8/2016, 19:25
I am preparing a history of the Windsor Schools in Hamm (Windsor Boys School and Windsor Girls School). They operated from 1953 to 1983 in the former Newcastle and Brixton Barracks (and their German army barracks from the mid 1930s). I am being assisted by a group of former teachers and students from the Windsor society and the various Facebook groups.. I would be grateful for any information, anecdotes and references, from those who recall the schools, or the barracks. Steve Green

Welcome looks like an interesting project you are involved in
I was at your rival King Alfred School from 1953 till 1957 before going onto Welbeck and a career in the Regular Army via Sandhurst
I actually lived in Hamm as a schoolboy for eighteen months when my father was with 5 Armoured Workshop (his Tank Repair area was to become the Girls Gym and of course the Station Cinema became their Assembly Hall. Two of my teachers at Ploen Miss Feerick (the first Headmistress of WGS I believe) and Mr Schofield,an Art Master transferred to Hamm when KAS closed
Will contact you privately shortly.

forgive me if it is the wrong school in Hamm. My elder brother attended a boarding school in Hamm during the mid to late sixties when my father was stationed in Wuppertal. He used to scare me with stories about "pegleg" roaming the corridors at night, who was the ghost of a fighter pilot who crashed into the roof of the school during the war.
Forced swims in the outdoor pool during the middle of winter weren't very popular either!

I was at WBS from summer 1966 through to the end of 1967 being one of those in Sandringham House. Indeed I still have a list I created at the time of who was in each of its dormitories plus the names of Sandringham's day boys. I also have a photo of the Bishop with those of us who did their confirmation. If either item is of interest please let me know.

Would a certain David Alderman be on your list by any chance?
