Harewood Bks - Herford

Does any one know what these bks are being used for now? spent many a long night stood freezin my nuts off on gate guard. but still have fond memories of the place

tony, i was in herford last year and the old camp is or was in the hands of the signals , bought a lump to the throat, went down town for a few beers as well , still tastes as good now as it did then.

I remember these barracks well.I joined my regiment,14th/20th Kings'Hussars in the summer of 1973.The pubs we used were Udos on the left of Mindener strasse as you went out of the main gate,and the other pub was Colins which was near the big NAAFI shop.Colins wife would let you leave your beer mat behind the bar till you got paid,and I was on guard the day she came into camp with a carrier bag bulging with unpaid beermats,demanding to see the adjutant!!!! The local brew Herforder pils was a great drink and when we went on exercise we always packed some in our vehicles.I've never been back since ,has it changed much?

Yes the camp now belongs to the Royal Signals. I don't know if it's in permanent use though. The last time I visited it it was only used as an exercise (remember them?) location, that was in the late 90s.
Saddest thing about the whole affair is that dear old Bosna Grill (balkan restaurant) over the road is no more. I remember when my regt first got to Wolfenbuttel me and a mate did a 200 mile round trip just to have a Bosna Platter again. When we ordered the head waiter remembered us and even guessed correctly what our order was going to be. We'd been away for 3 and a half years!

Thanks for that Harry.I've been on Google Earth and had a look at the barracks-it all looks the same,except for one building that wasn't there in 1973.As you went past A squadron accomodation block (as if you were going to the NAAFI)- it looks like a single storey building has been put up on the grassed area that used to be there on the right.-does anyone know what it is?Also looking at the photo that Cubton set in ,there is a brick wall across the main entrance,how long has that been up? Any answers greatly appreciated.

The Single storey building is the "new" NAAFI, it was built during 1 RTR's time in Harewood Barracks 1976-82. The camp is now used by the Royal Signals as a storage facility but no unit is actually based there anymore. Two friends of mine (both ex 1 RTR) were allowed to wander around ( with an escort) a couple of years ago.

Harewood is the home to 212 signal squaron.

It still homes the Sgts mess as far as i know.

Basically its just a tank parkk.. nothing great.

I was Stationed with the Royals in Harewood Barracks.We lived in a MQ in Glatzerstr.I was then a Troop Sgt and we were equipped with armoured cars(RECCE)

Probably for the repair of FV430 series belonging to the Sigs. We carried out in depth repair on these vehicles at 3 Garrison Wksp Bielefeld in 1999 when I was 2IC as an RO.

The 9/12th royal lancers were there in the early 90ties i lived out in the stix at Enger....Tongrubenweg to be precise. Is the go park still there?

WOW!...seeing this is brining the memories flooding back. Served with the 13/18H at Harewood from early 84 until we left at the end of 86.
My first wife was a local girl, and her grandfather actually built the place way back in the early 30's.
As far as single lads accommodation went Harewood was up there with the best, and I have to say, it had a great NAAFI, many many drunken nights!
Sad to hear of the Bosna Grill's demise...was always a great place for some late night grub.

I was in Harewood, as the Flight Segeant of the Air Sqn for 1 RTR. Great times, sad to hear of the demise of the Bosnian Grill, is Udo's still in business ?

One of the Mess Waitresses, was the owner of the local brothel, can't remember her name at the moment, nor the name of the establishment.

I still have the "Programme" for the 1 RTR Cambrai Ball in 1976.

the 12th regt ra took over harewood bks in jan56 till oct57 i was one of last to leave.it was taken over by the lancers.the first bar was across the main road was out of bounds.the next bar was willie schults about 1/4mile down the road on the l/hand side the other good place was the bier garden past the sports ground and the german cinema it was a great place to be at that time

Hi all,

Served at Harewood Barracks - 1952-54 when it was occupied by HQ BAOR Signal Regiment. Was in 3rd barrack block on the right close to the slope that went down to the cookhouse/NAAFI etc.
Used to catch the red train from Hook of Holland when going/returning from leave etc.
Did a lot of exercises whilst there - one notable one was Exercise Holdfast in 1952.
Left Herford on posting to Korea in June 1954 as a young Sgt.

Hi All,

When I was in Harewood barracks 1952-4, there was a stone statue of a bear. I think it had something to do with Siemens (the company). what ever happened to it.

Also remember that there was a YMCA on the left of Mindenerstrasse, just before the little river and bridge. From memory, it seemed to be a big private house with a sloping driveway..

Finally, I remember going to the little AKC Cinema in town to see that 3D film 'The House of Wax'.

I read about the bear ,just recently..I believe it is in the UK somewhere.For some reason 14SR sticks in the mind.I`ll see if i can find the article

Re the Harewood bear, something in the back of my mind I've read that it went to a Signal egiment in Hounslow. Was it 10 Signal Regt ?

10 SR HQ is at Corsham..I would have to check to see where the squadrons are.
