Me too. Lived on Poggenpohl that is. Queers on horseback were in Detmold when I was there in 75-77 although they might have come in part way through that period. Think there was a dancers regiment or maybe Hussars before QOH came. 14/20th perhaps?

That's my recollection as well, and did some one mention the crab kellar. Very Happy

We lived in a hiring in Waddenhausen for a while and then got a brand new flat at the top of allandsbusch or schlingenbush, great times.

And just outside Detmold was The Sexy Royale ,in Pivitsheide, I think it was. Did a duet once with one of the performers, and I am not on about singing.
Remember a lad came over from the UK and after his first night in the Grubber Keller he was talking marriage , to one of the girls known as Panzer.

Ah, those Germans, eh ? They give their girls such charming names; Panzer, Angriff, Minenwerfer, Spandau and my favourite - Steilhandgranate !

teabag, you probably did know it as 4 fld workshops at that time, that was when the government of the day tried something new [to them at least]by getting rid of brigades and replacing them with field forces,it did not last long.

Probably not Dave, unless he was serving at Bde HQ or the sig sqn. Nice to think we were there at the same time though.

We had one of the new flats in Hakedahl, on Allandsbush.

We were at Poggenpohl strasse block 12 flat 3, turn right off londener st, then first left. Bottom flat on the left. Past the block, down the slope was a dirt track next to the farmers field. I remember clearly that my dads sqd was the last block on the right as you came down the slope from the Sgt's mess. I believe his job at the time was Tank Cmd, not sure. I remember though when we were posted to Omagh he became SQMS

Was at 655 Squadron mid/late 70s then went to BATU Suffield and Middle Wallop.

@Teabag. THE BURNING HELICOPTER. I was on air traffic control tower duty the night those two lads burnt the helicopter. The guy that did it was called... well, let's call him Pat. He thought Avtag is like diesel and can't be set fire to. He held a lighter over the open fuel tank and Whoomp! up it went. Write off. I saw the fireball and hit the emergency button. The German fireman asked "What Quadrant is the problem?" I said "Drive out the door - can't miss it". Later, Pat was in the guard house when the camp commander of the day was posted out. I clearly remember him going up to Pat on the steps of the guard house and in front of the crowd of cheering guys giving him a box of matches.

Bars. I have many fond memories of the Why Not dance bar/Disco. What ever happened to it? I also remember a bar owned by an ex-Guardsman not too far away. I think his wife was called Renata - could be wrong. Don't remember the name of that place.

For quite a while I lived in 2nd floor of that turret you see in the photos where the big Orange ball artwork is. The little helicopter was there. I call the location the back entrance of the barracks. I remember if looking out the window the MPs were down behind to the left with the medical bay and REME guys were billeted across the street.

I remember one July 4th an American flyer attached to 655 came in his #1s and hoisted the Stars and Stripes in place of the Union Jack where the little helicopter was. We played Yellow Rose of Texas for him as he hoisted the flag.

I remember a Sgt pilot in 655 who drove an E Type Jag. Blue? Lilac? . His plate was HE P1G. Don't remember his name.

I remember doing guard duty at the cinema. The billboard over the entrance said "Music, The Sound Of".

I remember a guy in 655 we called Mad Martin. Used to eat wine glasses and beer mugs to impress girls. He kept a pet crocodile about 18" long in a tub for the longest time. I have no idea how he got away with that for as long as he did.

Good times.
