SKC Location?

Can anyone remember exactly where the SKC was located in 1970? I seem to remember walking from the MQ's through some woods before getting there. I think it may have been down the end of Artillerie Strasse? I had a look on Google Earth but still could not decide.

ISTR it was inside Dempsey Bks and the other one was in STC (Normandy Bks)! HTH

Thanks for the info, it must have been the one in Normandy Barracks as we used to walk from Lahrkamp Strasse. Was the MRS nearby?

You would have to walk past the MRS to get to the gate for STC.............I think! Unless there was a back gate out of Talbot Bks, see pic!!!

I had a look on Google Earth and I thought that must be the SKC. I seem to remember there were no lights along that stretch of road through the woods, well not in 1970.

Now I have a couple more questions as the memory is really in overdrive now. Any idea where the Primary School was located in relation to all this? We used to go by WD bus and pass a large tank transporter park where I remember there was an old Conqueror Tank that never seemed to move. Was the main NAAFI in Paderborn? I seem to remember the name Schloss Neuhaus for some reason.

Yeah the Primary School(s), which ISTR are called William Wordsworth & Robert Browning are both located within STC then there is a middle school called John Buchan and the Tank Transporter unit was located inside STC, the main road ran passed their unit lines and directly in front of their Workshops. The Naafi was at Schloss Neuhaus up until sometime in the the mid 80s IIRC. See pic, I'm afraid I don't know the locations of the two schools within STC!

The S(ervices) KC Cinema (had been A(rmy) KC) in Normandy Barracks (York Theatre) is the middle tract of the enlarged H block to the south of where you put your arrow. (You have pointed at the Scout Hut!) The Cinema in Dempsey doubled as the Keigthly Theatre - run for many years by Danny Rogers.

There was a (still is there) a gate from Talbot Bks opening on to Staumuehlestrasse and Artilleriestrasse, which was in use up until mid 1980s
The main NAAFI used to be in Horrocks Barracks Schloss Neuhaus - directly behind the Schloss. Premises have been handed back and the Stadt compensated by building a large NAAFI Complex on Sande Strasse - just to the left of Mommenweg on the satellite picture above.

I beg to differ Paddy, the bit in the middle of the H block may well have been used as a cinema at one time but during my time in 'Pader's' (79-86) I remember it being where the Scout hut was! The H block is in Theatre Bks and used to be used for presentations when going through NITAT ect.

Thanks for the info chaps even if slightly different regarding the location of the SKC. All I seem to remember is that the building was in the middle of some woods, possibly isolated and within walking distance of the MQ's. I have to say, this does fit in with what Soprano54 has illustrated? Don't forget, I am talking about 1970, things probably changed with the passage of time.

Was in Sennelager in the 70s at the Ammo Depot (Depot 90), the SKC was if I remember rightly just off the road into the Depot to the left, set in trees.

Globe Cinema (AKC) centre of H Block in Theatre Barracks  - it was used for trg presentations but the ranked seating and projection screens came from SKC - still there!

Interesting to note the building previously identified as "SKC Cinema" by Soprano, appears on the 1962 STC Map of Normandy Barracks as Bldg 185 MSO Superintend's Mess.
Other places of interest Bldg 182 (the H Block) AKC Cinema,
Antwerp Bks occupied predominantly by 23 Coy RASC (RASC became RAOC/RCT in 1965)
Bldg 201/202/203/204 Dressing Room, Swimming Pool, Pump House, Bath House respectively.
The Joining Instructions for those training at Sennelager include:
Discipline: Formations/Brigades will bring with them part of the RMP detachment to assist the Military Police permanently stationed in Sennelager (applies to ALL NATO).
Accommodation can be arranged with the Sennelager Det 1 (BR) Corps Provost Unit Sennelager.

I joined my Regt The 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards direct from Boys Sqd (RAC) Bovington.
My Regt were then in Athlone Barracks .Sennelager .I arrived on a late night in Dec 1957.No one know I was arriving and I was standing on Paderborn Station for ages. So eventually I got a a taxi to Sennelager.AS I said arrived late.Guard commander said I would have to spend the night in the Guard-room.
OK no choice really.Next day got some bedding and found myself in HQ Block.The reason for all this confusion was about 50 % The Regt were all on Xmas block leave and were not due back until 2nd week of Jan !! The rest were out on exercise.(bet they loved that )!!
Well I had a great time doing nothing walking around camp.Three meals a day..No duties.What could be better.So Jan came and I started Soldiering !!  I was in Athlone until I got a posting out to 20 Armd Brigade HQ @ Detmold.Hobart Barracks for two years.Then back to Athlone .We left there to go to The UK in 1964 to Aliwal  Barracks .Tidworth.I for one really enjoyed Sennelager.A place that was a bit isolated but if you had private transport..well OK.I Did thank goodness.

The drafting org sending out troops to Germany were quite religious  about number of days leave and embarkation following training/ and how old you were now in boys service lines
- and  - RAC Depot probably had a Christmas close down programme,
- and - BAOR was operating on optimum manning levels; units only allowed a precise number on UK or local leave at any time, - going strictly by BAOR SO and the Leave Manual you as a newbie would have to serve 6 mnths in theatre before being entitled to UK leave.

Athlone Barracks
was quite new way back then (Build 1951-54) - but miles from nowhere on the edge of the range.  In most recent years (around 2010) or so the single soldier's living accn has been improved, new build four/five storey blocks even, flatlets.  The pine trees around the camp have been harvested thrice since you were there.  

May 2020  ATHLONE Barracks not being handed back; to be a kind of BATUs accn and veh fleet base for units in training  - Tank Wksps ideal, hangars for vehs, Offrs' and Sgts' Messes and accn,
modern well heated sldrs' accn quite new, tank washdown outside camp (Diebesweg). Socially distant from Sennelager and Paderborn and Bad Lippspringe/Marienloh (local Taxi firms will soon have that sorted!), ideal cross country run routes North and West of camp - Golf course nearby, classification ranges within marching distance.
