A message of the utmost priority and importance
To all it may concern.
Our Webmaster Phil is alive and kicking
He has not:- 1. Been abducted by Aliens 2. Deserted 3. Crossed over to the enemy 4. Kicked the bucket 5. Won the lottery and off to a Desert Island 6. Run away to be a "Tree Hugger"
He is alive and well and getting used to the trials and tribulation of being a "Tiffy".
Seriously, I have managed to make contact and received an e-mail from him earlier today. He hopes to be back with us as soon as he can.
Paul.

Paul,
I`ve long wondered as to where our said Webmaster, `had gone too.
Now that you have explained this.
Could you perhaps go a step further, and enlighten `myself` explaining `as to what the word "Tiffy" means, (me) being some kind of a dick-head, with the current Jargon!!!
Kind regards,
Stitch.

Take post ! "Tiffy" is an abbreviation of "Artificer" (REME, of course). Detachments rear ! Baz.

Thanks Baz,
I`m grateful of your `explanation, for i had not been aware, of this expression, until i had began to explore these Web-sites, where frequently i would come across them.

Bazza
At the risk of starting another civil war on this site (and I do have two Gunner brothers) I always believed it was the Cavalry that brought tone to what would have otherwise been a vulgar brawl.
You are correct about Artificers but REME inherited the term when the specialist Gunner armourers were transferred to the Corps in 1943, it was then expanded to include all specialist skilled tradesmen SNCOs and WOs ( eg RAC vehicle mechanics.)

That was a foul rumour started by the Donkey Wallopers mate! Watch The King's Troop on Trooping for a demonstration of dignity.
Thanks for the "extra" on the Tiffy, I didn't want to load Stitch down with historical facts! Baz

Well Gentlemen,
It had not been my intention to kick start (WW3) though i was vaguely familiar with the expression of (Artificers) i was not then familiar with that of Tiffy.
However that said, Bazza has now kindly sorted me, but not quite. Speaking frankly, i came down on the side of Artillerymen, or man! as being the meaning of artificers. But canot make the `connection or link, to that of Tiffy:. Quite where (REME, comes in to the equation, i`m not at all sure!.

Don't forget the Navy boy's (although it is easy), but they have been using the term Tiffy for many a year, long before we were blessed in 1942 by formation of the REME.

All Specialist Armourers were in fact (R)AOC since 1896!
The appointment of Artificer Sergeant and Artificer Sergeant Major existed in the RAOC Armourers, Engineering & Workshops sections when the were transfered to REME in 1942 to form the backbone of the new Corps along with some RE & RASC workshops. The term ceased to be used by the RAOC at the same time.

Whatever the outcome, this infraction:, has brought about, be it minor or otherwise. I`ve now decommissioned all my weapons of "mass destruction!!
So please leave me out, should this "vulgar brawl" transcend into the inevitable all out war, it appears to be heading for.
That said, i dont recall any of the `guys` of our days, doing a bunk, when the going looked like it was about to get messy:.
Stand your ground Bazza, for i`m at your shoulder.

Hi guys,
My apologies for my spelling errors, it`s a double (r) in surrender, and i`m not sure if i got the right (straight), in relation to line. Sorry about that, but the funny thing about it, i just don`t seem to see things, as once i did.
Must be getting old.

Our webmaster has updated the statistics on visitors and page views today.
With a total of nearly 270,000 unique visitors, and nearly 2.3 million page views on the main site, I think that the purpose for which the site was built (and continues to build) has been fulfilled.
As to this Forum, approaching 6,100 posts, with 675 members (to date) and an average of 5 posts per day, means that there is always an interest in the Forum.
Personally, I would like to extend my thanks to all of those who have contributed information and photographs in order to build on the history of BAOR and other related subjects.
I would also like to think that, in some small way, old friends have been able to re-establish contact, and that we all have had a part in bringing this history to the fore again.
Thank you all.
Paul.

We don't seem to call anything by its proper name in the forces for some reason. We in the Sigs (shoot him he said sigs!), have Foreman of Signals shortened to FOS (Foz) and Yeoman of Signals shortened to YOS (Yoz). All knobs by the way
Amateur callsign M0AXJ (lapsed).

Dandc,
Donkey Walloper was also used for the Army Service Corps in WW1 and carried on for the RASC afterwards. I was even called one when I was in the RCT as well. Can't comment for the RLC though!!
