In 1962 I was posted to 54 company RASC in St Georges Barracks on the outskirts of Minden, in the same camp was 45 regiment RA. I see in the history of this camp both these units were not mentioned as being stationed there. Any old sweats out there remember being a part of the "galloping 54" There are a few of us who are still in touch with each other from the early 60s so if anyone reading this remembers me Weegie Roper, Malc (ginger) Deller, Dick Walmsley, Bronco Lane. Roly Gilder, Taffy Maher, John Holloway, the famous CSM Dave Kelly, and Jimmy Danton give us a shout on this forum

Hiya Blairgowrie and Ciphers. I see by your cap badge you may have served with The Black Watch in Minden. I was "attached" to The Black Watch for 28 days just before I was posted to Malaya. The reason this came about was my mate and I went down town for a few drinks maybe more that a few and decided it would be a good idea to "borrow" a German flag, however this paticular one was on top of a 30ft flag pole so we decided the best way to get it was to take the pole as well. We were apprehended by the local polizei running past the Red Shield club with this pole one at each end. We were up before the Old Man in the morning and were given 28 days nick. However we did not have a decent guardroom up at St Georges Barracks so he sent us down to The Black Watch with the orders to give us a hard time, and that they did. When we came out of there we were fit as a fiddles. Must have polished that bloody gong and bell 50 times."The Tarra" as you used call the RSM made sure we did not want to come back again. Happy Days !!!!!

hi weegie, have just noticed your post where you mention bronco lane and taffy maher, were these guys also at bunde and was maher also known as the beast? some of the names are familiar to me, bronco lane was the first guy i met on arriving at bunde 67/68 i think he was a corporal and as i was not expected to arrive and they knew nothing about me he put me up in the guard room for the weekend and sorted me out with some cig coupons.
my second name is brown so of course my nickname was hovis spent two years at bunde then went to 2 div hq lubbecke

Hello, Blairgowrie. Glad to see there`s now two red hackles on board. Guess I missed that fact when you first came on line. Do you recall those parties we threw in Sennelager when you arrived in BAOR from Cyprus. We should talk later.

He Recce, just talked a to mate over in Deilinghofen (yeah he's been there since 66). He was up to Sennelager over the Easter Holidays camping at the Daughters camp site. Says he didn't have to do fire piquette or G.D.s in the kitchen.

Hi Weegie, welcome. I was in Minden around that time not with your mob but I was with !st Bn Worcestershire Rgt at Clifton Barracks. Obviously those names don't ring any bells but I seem to recall hearing about two guys trying to nick a flag, pole and all. I'm surprised you got done for it as it couldn't have been worth anything. As I recall anything worth anything had, by then been nicked by the "Poison Dwarves" the Cameronians from across the river
