I have been sent a picture of my ferret (I think !! - its 99%)
It is a photo of the farewell parade from 1st RTR leaving Herford Barracks. The photo shows a lead ferret carrying the standard, followed by two ferrets line abreast with soldiers stood to attention with rifles. White gloves etc. the lead vehicle is a Mk 1 reg 35BA56, the others are both Mk 1's.
Apparantly it appears in the Feb 83 "TANK" Journal of the RTR. Does anyone have a copy of this journal , or similar photos from the farewell parade . You ex RTR guys are the best to ask - anyone have a farewell parade picture in the loft !???

You might want to check on the dates you quoted. Although the units you give were in Herford near enough in succession, the years are not quite right, and this may be confusing some people.
For example, 1 RTR were in Herford in 1982. There is a photograph of them on the first page of the image gallery, and there are Ferrets in the picture, but unable to see the Reg No's.
Have a look here:- http://www.1rtr.net/frontpage.html Did you know that they have, or had, a magazine called First Edition? May be someone will be able to give more info on it.

With you listing the units as you have. Do you have a copy of the B Vehicle Record Card?

That parade photo was the one that led me to the other 2 I have, I understand that someone called Tony Hart sent the parade ground picture. I now have a picture of the actual parade being led by 3 Mk 1 ferrets (mine is the rear one). I then then registered on the RTR forum and a guy called Lewis sent a great close up shot of the front of the ferret. It has a diamond on the side (HQ) squadron and shows plenty of detail.
I have asked the webmaster at 1stRTR website to pass my details on as I would love to hear from Mr lewis !! I Am trying to build up a history on this vehicle. (Which today had some new brake pipes fitted !!)
Thanks

Yes indeed they are. But it gives you a chance to select a marking scheme relative to the vehicle!
Any idea what it is yet?

I have a bit of a dilemma on that one. I have a friend who is ex- 10th Hussars (he went to Aden with ferrets) , saw some action and because mine was with the 10th Hussars ( Albeit In Germany and he has provided me with a wealth of info. So that is one option. Alternativey I know have a close up photo from its time with the RTR, so I know what it looked like in the early 80's.
It had a HQ squadron diamond on thye hull and had Black and green Camo. From the photo I have from the "scrap Yard" in 1996 I can see some of the rest of the camo pattern.
Ao I am not sure - Maybe RTR with some references to the Hussars. The radio set is another issue - its got a clansman setup , and this fits in with the RTR era.
However, I still have lots of photos to find from the other regiments ............ It was in for 30 years !!

Fugly,
I saw your comment about the 'Info Tube' attached on your Ferret engine on another web site.
Although you mention the papers details inside were rather 'rat eaten.' I wanted to say that all that was on the paper record were 'Modification' details, written on cloth impregnated paper. Details usually only consisted of a series of Modification record numbers.
I suspect that a Ferret, being an 'A Vehicle.' that this was best practice for transfering info about Workshop Modifications. Out in a theatre of war, one could at a glance without a Vehicle Record Book ascertain info about the engine.

Thanks for trying anyway - when it was with the Hussars they had a RECCE troop and I assume it was also with the same with 1st RTR ?
IIRC your Ferret was with 1RTR from 1976? When 15/19H took over from 1RTR in Tidworth they were both Armd Recce Regts. Essentially every sabre troop was a recce troop and the Ferrets belonged either to Command Troop or to SSMs of sabre squadrons, but then you knew that already cos I have told you this on another means.
Prior to the reorganisation to integrate CVR(T) and the Armd Recce Regiment (replacing the Armoured Car Regiment), armoured regiments had a recce troop with Ferret. After the reorganisation, every major unit in the Armoured Division (two times armed regt, three times inf bn) got a close recce troop provided from the divisional Armd Recce Regt with Scimitar.

Hello John
When you look through the CD , keep an eye out for any ferret pics . Mine is a Mk 1/1 which means it left the factory without a turret ( "The Sports Version"!! ) but that does not mean it did not have a turret fitted at some point in its career , so dont ignore any ! Mine ended up with a basket on the back etc.
A lot of mark 1's were coverted with turrets , and became a different mark, and some were retro from mark2 to mark 1.
I think the BIG WHEEL ferrets (Mark 4 were converted mark 2's, and the mark 5's were converted mark 4's) Confusing isnt it !!
Anyway mine is a 1/1 and spent a lot of time "out in the woods" on exercise, relaying radio traffic. I have made contact with one of the commanders from 1978 and he is coming to see me for a reunioun photo !
All help is appreciated - if there any ferrets on the CD please make a note of the numbers and let me know as they may still be around.
Thanks
Jim

How interesting that I should be reading about 'Peddallin Up' practice on the Ferret all these years later and the pain which a 'False Neutral' could inflict on the ankle and knee. As an instructor at Ludgershall I remember stressing this point to student drivers. A similar practice applied to the Saracen.

I was looking at a well-turned out Ferret Mk 2/3 last weekend. This one started it's carreer with "The Shiny Ten" in '61 though. Having read all the comments on pedalling up (twenty depressions in each gear I seem to recall!), I don't see anyone talking about that greatest of all sins, letting the pedal out like a clutch. Now THAT is the way to wear out your brake bands. I wish I had a quid for every time I said "It's not a clutch, it's a GCP, FORGET clutch! Last time I said it was to a group of aspiring Saracen drivers from 7 Sqn RCT, heading for Ireland in the 70's. I think they got the message, they were good lads. brum

There were some Ferrets with 14 Regt. RA in Dortmund (64-66), but I can't remember how many. Going on exercise, I can recall one breaking down around Hanover on a bitter night, couldn't seem to fix it and my Sgt left me with the driver to nurse it to Soltau - in a snow storm. That was a loooooong night!
Also had them in Cyprus (UN Force Reserve) with 15/19s in '76 to patrol the Green Line.
