gingerjim,

It could well have been that one, although to be fair it was one of the better grades of
schnapps. Some of them were pure firewater. I remember the first night out I had in Hannover and it was the usual routine to get the new boys well and truly blotto. I was given a bier with a chaser called (if my spelling is correct) Ratzeputz. This was like liquid pepper and the game was you had to have at least six to become a 'member of the club'. It was a good job it was a Friday night as I was in bed for the whole of Saturday @ Sunday. That one really did come back at you even if you only had water to drink. The lads always referred to it as 'Rats Piss'. I will add that I never renewed my membership!!

I always stuck to.....

Noch ein bier,

Norman.

In Nienburg young idiots used to drink a concoction called a Traffic Light.

The ingredients were, I think Ratzeputz (red), weinbrandt (amber)
and Escorial (green).
The barman poured each one carefully so that they lay on top of each other, red amber and green.

No, I never tried it !

Any body still drink the chaser made with schnapps and bitter lemon served very cold, cant remember what it was called , Sour something in Herford IIRC. Gets em all going when I get a bottle out at a party, has been known to cause problems with vertical stability.

Digressing slightly, I once bought a bottle of unidentifiable clear alcohol in Kyrenia, it was 99% proof. When I brought it home I tried it neat and it was disgusting I then tried it with Coke, even more disgusting, so I poured it away. Next time I went out to Cyprus I spotted a guy cleaning his plastic garden furniture with the stuff!, Rolling Eyes

my first posting on leaving blighty was 15 abod raoc antwerp, it was a first world war fort with a big moat around it, on my first saturday night recce in the local village i was introduced to draught stella artois, now bearing in mind back in blighty in the naafi they served watneys i was not really used to strong beer, i remember going into the local pub and ordering a beer . them my mind went a complete blank, i woke up next morning to find a pool of water by my bed and my best bd , soaking wet and covered with pond weed, according to the guard commander i walked back from the village on my own ,walked straight into the moat and the guard had to fish me out with rifle and bayonet. my god was i in a mess ,i had to buy from the qm a new bd , and shirt , the ones i was wearing were torn by the bayonets, needless to say it never happened again , i developed a respect fot the customs and booze of other countries, ginger.

Yer have to agree with you there jim Stella was dangerous stuff. Used to get it in small plastic glasses at some of the training camps. I think vogelsang was 1 had a horrible big hill and not much else around it but the naafi was belgium and used to sell trays of Stella.

In Nigeriia ,the locals made a rather tasty brew called "Palm Wine" which was a milky colour.
I persuaded one of them to sell me s bottel (for coppers),my intention being to bring it back to the UK.After a couple of days the stuff became clear so i decided to check if it was ok.Eureka i discovered the proverbial paint stripper.
A few days later when i was almost back to normal i mentioned it to one of the locals, who with a big grin said IT MUST BE DRUNK WITHIN TWO DAYS.
Apparently, the longer you keep it,the more toxic it becomes affraid
