Just the memory makes my teeth ache ! Condensed milk sandwiches???? Not only does the thought make my teeth ache but it turns my gills a particular brilliant shade of green!! As for the bananas and peanut butter concoction....looked terrible, admittedly, but if Elvis liked it how bad can it be???

- Hardrations,
You mentioning the size of the German population in Wpg reminds me that there was a large Canadian/German club there which we frequently visited when in Wpg for the weekend from Shilo. once inside you could have been in a beerhall in Germany complete with oompha band, great beer, food and girls - happy days(nights). Bob
Likewise had/have a large German population in Calgary, but most of them seemed to be Bavarian. Surprisingly, given the large base that was once here and which often was the first posting post-Germany for Canadians, not many of them were Westphalian or from our old Brigade area. We also had a couple of German restaurants, but again more Bavarian, cuckoo clock type German than what I knew. There still exists a nice little place out in a foothills village not far from Calgary (Bragg Creek) but here too he was Southern German...Black Forest if I remember correctly. And a large German-Canadian Club as well, but decidedly not Westphalian in feel, but for a homesick boy who yearned for Germany that first year I was back, it was close enough!!

Conny onny (correct spelling) was a gourmet treat (We had f*** all else) in Liverpool and surrounding areas. Now peanut butter is definitely the devils own concoction, bearing a remarkable appearance to what was coming out of my body this week when I had a stomach bug! People can be allgeric to peanuts. Never heard of anyone dying of conny onny allergy. Elvis! Bloated, drug addled mentalist. Need one say more? More pictures of German sausages please!

| This unhealthy obsession with the (phallic) Wurst. Sticking my head above the parapet again (as is my wont !) can I remind eveyone that there are other things on the menu than The Sausage ? While I used to frequent the "Schenlli", outside the NAAFI Family Shop in Hemer, as I wended my erratic way home, apart from the Currywurst not much else got my tastebuds working. The Bockwurst was a watery, squishy thing and the Bratwurst, with its slice of curly weissbrot and blob of senf left much to be desired. The Frickadelle was something I never attempted, no matter HOW pissed I was ! Going out for a meal we used to go for things like Zigeuner or Jaeger Schnitzel. Near Hemer was an eatery called "Im Kuhle" where you could get stuff like Wild Boar chops. The Germans do things to chicken that is nothing short of wizardry. Why the hell is anyone wasting their dentistry on bloody fast food ? Make room for Donald McDonald ! | |

If eaten inside the place, they used to give you a finger bowl. Most squaddies mistook it for a Soup for starters!

| I had my first half chicken and half ltr pills at hans meyer's in bielefeld, about 1969. i thought it was the most brilliant thing i had ever had. i too waited for a KFS to turn up, but was instructed to just rip in and then use the "wet wipe' to clean up with afterwards. it was also my first taste opf paprika. it would have been considered 'foriegn muck" in our house at home. | |

Gasp... blasphemy, pure blasphemy!!! How else would one eat pancakes?? Well, okay, maybe with a bit of sugar and lemon but it's just not the same!! And it's butter, maple syrup and pancakes, I'll have you know!!! - brum wrote:

Yes, well....can't say that Marmite looks much better! Now, while I don't actually mind the bananas and peanut butter combo, I really haven't had it much since I was a kid and even then, not often. I was more into the strawberry jam and peanut butter combo, myself. Sometimes marmalade and peanut butter. Or just peanut butter, although that could be a bit dry and palate stickum uppum..... - brum wrote:

There is that, yes. But I was thinking more of the young Elvis, circa 1960s/70s....although I suppose the bananas and peanut butter thing didn't exactly help him to maintain his physique any!!

The Bockwurst was a watery, squishy thing and the Bratwurst, with its slice of curly weissbrot and blob of senf left much to be desired. The Frickadelle was something I never attempted, no matter HOW pissed I was ! Ahhh, fond memories of that Schnelli....last I heard the fellow who ran it managed to retire to Majorca on what he made off the Canadians and Brits. Wouldn't surprise me one bit. He no doubt made a fortune! I never saw him not busy and he was on that site for a good 30 years, I'd say! My first ever Bratwurst was at that Schnell-Imbiss and it was love at first bite!!! I guess by the time you lot arrived he'd grown careless or whatever with them (assuming the same fellow owned/worked the Imbiss all that time). I never found the Bratwurst to be that bad....perhaps a tad greasy but, hey, at 17 years of age, "greasy" just isn't a concern!! I do agree about the Bockwurst, however....never have cared for Bockwurst myself...give me a good solid Brattie any day!! Likewise, I was a bit iffy -- VERY iffy, actually -- about the Frickadelles and never ate one from there. My first one, as I recall, was at a pub in Soest we Canadians called "Isenbeck's" (actually Zum Linden), along Hiddingser Weg, just north of B-1, across from the Belgique Kaserne (the Kaserne is now long gone and "Isenbeck's" is now a veterinary clinic) and I enjoyed it. Even if it was actually horse!!! - brum wrote:

Near Hemer was an eatery called "Im Kuhle" where you could get stuff like Wild Boar chops. The Germans do things to chicken that is nothing short of wizardry. Yes!! Zigeuner (or Gypsy) Schnitzel and Jaegerschnitzel....mmmm-mmmm!!! Just thinking about them makes my mouth water!! That first bite was an immediate transport to something akin to heaven! I remember Im Kuhle....and I believe I may well have had the boar (not, I hasten to point out the 'baor'!! Just saying....). As I recall, one could also get bear steakettes...yeah, no thanks!!! - brum wrote:

| Eels of any description I could not eat. Yeuk! It's the thought of having pancakes for breakfast that is so sickening, not the fact that you put syrup on them Stephen. Full English however is another thing. Can't beat it! Never had Marmite in my life although have had bovril and oxo. Is there a difference?
