OK, so you may be a Lt Col now, but that still doesn't give you the right to question my whereabouts. So there!

| I envy you, ciphers....up around there is some gorgeous, misty, wonderfully isolated country. And here I am stuck on the Canadian Prairies!
Noted you used the aboriginal designation of Haida Gwaii....good for you! Few do, preferring to continue referring to this area as The Queen Charlottes...which is fine and all, but I rather prefer Haida Gwaii. Has a whole different "ring" to it and suits the area (go figure!).
For those outside of Canada...."Haida" refers to the Native culture of the West Coast (well, some of them. Not all of them are/were Haida, but the Haida were -- arguably -- the dominant culture of the region at one time and quite advanced artistically and socially). Not sure what "Gwaii" translates as....homeland or something.
To get a picture in your mind of what Haida Gwaii is like, imagine the Orkney Islands but with lots and lots of fir trees everywhere and rolling soft mists coming in off the water....

| Speaking of promotions. Some years back I contacted my old OC who was then a Major General and SOinC to boot with a request to help me contact someone.
He kindly did and in one of his letters (before email) he mentioned a guy that I was with in Germany and was a lance jack, was now a Lt Colonel. Evidently after I left a new policy was introduced that made this possible?
Amazing stuff really when you think he was once a big piss head like the rest of us.
(not that Colonels and stuff weren't partial to the odd tipple mind).

| Knew a fella who got to be a 2nd Lt. wonder what ever happened to him? Most of the fella's I worked with weren't the type to become officers. | |

| There used to be War Office selection boards (WASB),that anyone who showed particular promise got put on.I know of a few ex brats, who when they completed training went on these. Stokoe was one.I think that`s where most of the NS officers came from. |

| There are two types of ex brat in the Royal Signals the Apprentices from Harrogate and many went on to be officers and the former 6 Boys Trg Regt later Junior Leaders from Denbury at the last count 13 Lt Cols and 23 Majors and Capts all through the ranks but with a ceiling of Lt Col retiring at 55...plus another who went to Sandhurst as a SSgt and recently retired at 60 as a Major…they may be more not known about...it looks like only 2500 boys went through Denbury Camp from Sep 55 to Aug 67
Former Royal Signals Major General David McDowall CBE retired Aug 09 after 36 years service do not know he was an ex brat or not but he was a Cpl

| Some one had to mention him!!
'Wullie' Robertson joined the cavalry as a Trooper and served in every rank from trooper to Field Marshall (5 star general) - only man to do so in the history of the British Army. A brilliant achievement in any age though more so in class ridden Britain's Victorian and Edwardian eras
