I am sure like everyone else on here I was sickened beyond measure when I saw this when it occured. I still am sickened by the incident.
This vid gives some info I hadn't seen before.
It also mentions that some squaddies who were close by, were 'ordered off', and not to go near or help out.

Does anyone know if the helicopter above was armed on that day ?
I assume they had something on board.
I recall providing an escort to a civilian explosives wagon on delivery from Southern Ireland to the huge underground salt mines near Carrickfergus.
We picked the van up near Newry.
Some IRA scroats got on our tail, so I called a Puma gun bus down near Moira ( I was the wirely op). Which actually told them to F- OFF over their loudspeakers.
They did !
So some choppers were heavily armed and around.
I can't understand why the helicopter did nothing, when they saw all that went on, on that awful day for those 2 lads.

I remember this episode very well. I am glad that I am not the only one that reacted so angrily to the savage murder of these two unfortunate men who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. After my army years it took me a long time to be able to be at ease with anyone sporting an Irish accent, my brother still has this reaction following a couple of close calls whilst on patrol in Belfast.
