| HQ BAOR was first situated at Bad Oeynhausen, before relocating to Bunde and then Rheindalen. Does anyone know:
i) Why Bad Oeynhausen was chosen? ii) The name(s) of the barracks in Bad Oeynhausen? iii) Why it relocated to Bunde? iv) Did the barracks then close immediately or did another unit move in? v) When the army eventually pulled out of Bad Oeynhausen?

| I think it re-located to Bünde because the old SOXMIS building was there, but I am probably way off the mark on that one. | |

| I think Montgomery's HQ was there when the Germans surrendered. Perhaps it was initially sited there for that reason.
Not even sure the HQ was in a barracks, perhaps a large country house was requesitioned | |

| I know that it was a long time ago, but wasn't Monty's HQ 21st Army Group which later in 1945 became BAOR with temporary HQ in BadO(as we used to name it)?
That's where Rhine Army postings and replacements were sent to be farmed out all over BAOR as required. The HQ was in large private buildings in BadO. It moved to Rheindahlen in 1954.
I remember arriving in BadO off the train from the Hook one Sunday in April 1953 and being billeted in the town hall (straw mattresses on the floor) for the night , then posted out to my unit next day.
As we progress with this one it will all come back! |

| I started school there in about '54, and it was still HQ BAOR then, it must have moved soon after because we moved to RheinD and lived in the white city | |

| HQ BAOR apparently moved to Rheindalen in October 1954, although I would suggest that that date was when most of the move had been made.

| Anyone know the whereabouts of the Signals Receiver and Transmiiter sites ? I know they were a couple of miles out of BadO near the Autobahn. When I was in Herford first time 1952-4, we Signal wireless ops used to do shift work at the receiver site. Me manned radio receivers called an AR88 made by RCA of America. Our job was to send/receive signal traffic on live links. As I remember, the links were to Berlin, BTA(British Troops Austria) Austria, British troops in Trieste and Fonteinblau just outside Paris. We had a small kitchen on site and could knock up egg on toast etc and tea. The shifts were around 8 hours and we used to have a day off every fourth day. Most of the traffic was in morse code and our speed was a very modest 15 WPM. Reckon if I was to brush up on the old morse code, I might be able to hold my own even althought it is nearly 60 years ago. Would be nice to know where all this happened.
