I wonder if he knows my cousin Len-he lives in California. Ex Sapper, last seen on Christmas Island LOL...chemist, do you have any idea how BIG California is? Good lord, the population of Los Angeles alone is in the millions and California, or parts of it, can be one continuous urban sprawl. The chances of him knowing your cousin Len are probably astronomical. It's like what I used to get: "Ohhh...you're from Canada, then? Do you know [fill in the blank]?" I used to respond by trying to explain just how big my home and native land is (albeit, sparsely population through most of it) and gave up on that. It was far more fun to respond with "Oh, yeah, sure I know him (her)!!! He's serving time for murder/rape/bank robbery last I heard...." or some such outlandish characterization...I mean really outlandish; so outlandish they'd immediatly "get" how ridiculous their thinking one Canadian would automatically know another. It was more effective than trying to tell them Canada is half a continent and 300million people.

| Re Cousin Len
THAT WAS ONE OF MY FEEBLE JOKES OLD BEAN. I get the same now that we have moved to the Irish Republic ,especially from our Trans-Atlantic cousins-"Sure you must know my folks from Ballygobackwards" I do appreciate how big Canada is . Flew Brize to Washington 6-7 hours. Toronto to Calgary 5-6 hours. Are we there yet? No ,two more hours to Batus down the Trans Canada. That is big! Best bit of the trip was being bumped up to business class from Toronto to Calgary. Now that was living

| My "bubble"is on the banks of the River Lee in Cork City-about 50 Km from where I actually live.
From my house, on a hill, I can see three sets of masts. and the local Eircom (BT) switchboard building, none of them more than 5 Km away.

Oh, absolutely Canadians do it to...."Oh, you're Australian...I have a [fill in the blank] who lives in Brisbane..." when the Aussie in question lives in Sydney or Melbourne or, gasp, Alice Springs! I suspect it's a human trait rather than a national one. as for "BOT"...bots are automatic computer thingies (a technical term "thingy") that often pop up on forums or file sharing sites etc. Pains in the butt....I'm not sure as to their purpose, although some are quite sophisticated, capable of carrying on what initially appears to be a real conversation because they are programmed to recognized certain words. Essentially "bot" = "robot".

| BOTS I went online and HE was there in the US and of course me-nobody else
The box on the left of the screen said- 1 registered, 0 hidden,0 guests,1 bot
A few seconds later-1 registered, 0 hidden 1 guest HE was still there as was I.
If you notice the line under the map screen says in effect that it is renewed every five minutes. Stephen, before I read your bit about BOT I was thinking "BOT=broke off transmission" Could it be that it registers someone who has left the site in the past five minutes. Watch this space |

Len(Ciphers) That's a good point Len. Wouldn't it be great if a former GSFG type would come on-line and offer up some of their perspective of what went on in BFG (especially an ex-SOXMIS member). There are millions of untold stories out there that former Russian or East German military intelligence personell could tell us (assuming there's a statute of limitations on their equivelant of the Official Secrets Act). By the way, if you (or anyone for that matter) get up to the Okanagan give me an e-mail and we'll arrange to go to the local for a few. If you haven't been to the Gasthaus on the Lake you'll love the place. (I insist on calling it by the north German name 'gasthof" to everyone's puzzlement.) It's the most authentic German-style place I've seen outside that country. The Warsteiner and Isenbeck beer slides down very nicely. (Wish they had Herforder, but we can't have everything.) Cheers in advance.

I hadn't thought about former bloc personnel logging on, but of course why wouldn't they? I logged on, as a Canadian Army Brat, only because Dad served under the British (or alongside, I guess) in 71-72 as mentioned elsewhere and I thought I might find a few things of interest...instead I've found LOTS of stuff of interest (thanks all, btw). I've noticed a few German nationals whose parents, or themselves, worked for or were otherwise involved with BAOR also on the site. Given all that -- i.e. the various connections different folk have to BAOR -- it makes sense former "Easties" would likewise check it out. No doubt there would be some interesting stories from their side of things and quite a different perspective as well. - recce83 wrote:

Cheers in advance. Was the term "gasthof" strictly a North German term? Interesting. What did they call them down south, then? I am aware of other terms such as gaststatte (there's an umlaut in there somewhere) but not really sure of the difference between the two. "Gasthaus", which many German restaurants here in Canada seem to adopt (and which largely tend to be more Bavarian), seems to me to be more along the lines of what one might call a Bed&Breakfast or "Pension" with a pub attached...literally a "Guest House" or Inn. Pleased to see your Gasthaus on the Lake serves Warsteiner and Isenbeck's! Both were my beer of choice while living in Soest, although I have since discovered "Isenbeck's" is not, in fact, a German brewery at all but Argentine or some such. One of the Canadian teens' favourite gasthofs was one we named "Isenbeck's" (actually named Zum Linden) along Hiddingser Weg, just north of the B-1, across from the Belgique Kaserne. The Kaserne is gone (a housing developement now) and the former Isenbeck's is now a veterinarian clinic. I have no idea what happened to the wood table situated in the old "Canada Corner" upon which two or more generations of Canadian teens carved our names, nicknames and declarations of enduring love (or love which endured until the next posting, anyway). Warsteiner and Isenbeck's were distinct, I thought, to NRW and not to be found in the southern regions (i.e. Black Forest, Bavaia etc), but I could be wrong.

If you blow the map up several times, there appears to be two, not one, watchers in California situated in the adjacent towns of Mountain View and Alviso, about 25 miles NW of San Jose at the south end of San Francisco Bay. Glad to know others besides me have been wondering who is sitting in the weeds. (Both are on line as I write this at 1600 Zulu.)

Cheers in advance. Hi recce83, "Gasthaus" is not strictly a North German therm. "Gasthaus" and "Gaststätte" are the same. First one is the old therm, second is use today. "Gaststätte" is nevertheless still a familiar name. Here is a rough translation from wikipedia.de: A "Gasthaus" (or" Wirtshaus" or "Wirtschaft" , in rural regions of northern Germany "Dorfkrug" in Schleswig Chen "Krog", in Saxony "Erbgericht", in Upper Lusatia "Kretscham", especially in student circles "Schänke" or "Schenke" - derived from serving or dispensing) is a gourmet establishment in which drinks or food for immediate consumption sold and a residence of this opportunity, for example, a restaurant, a "Biergarten" or a "Kneipe". I think this is becoming an obsession, but I find it interesting to know who is sufficiently interested in the old days of BAOR to surf for hours on this site. I have just noticed that if you look at the box below the map you can see what the onliners are looking at. Watch and see what the California Phantom is watching
Maybe they don't qualify to join in,but come on guys there are ways.

| Guess I should have said "Westfalian" rather than north German because I never saw the word gasthaus used in that province. Then there was the "bierstube" we used to see frequently. Regardless of the name the end result was frequently the same: headaches, "Dortmunder flu", and a marked reluctance to fall in on parade next morning. | |
