| How many of us NS men spent our first two weeks with RA Oswestry before being posted to other regiments as NS men?
I went there in November 1952. What a wake-up call it was too!
Cold, wet miserable weather. Hour after hour pounding that parade ground. The wooden 'spider' huts. The awful food (everything on one aluminium tray all spilling into one sloppy mass), the tea urn with bromide in it-the red bricked cells for those among us who dared challenge an NCO!
However, it was a great leveller and provided you did what you were told was the start to making men out of us boys!
The NAAFI was a haven there from the rigours of the working day.
Memories-of Oswestry-thanks but no thanks. When I was sent to RMP Inkerman Barracks, Woking two weeks later the shock was even worse-sixteen plus weeks of more of the same-but we weathered it-and the two years soon passed!

| Ian, I don't know what RMP unit was at Bielefeld when you were there, but in 51-52 I think it was 101 Provost Coy,we of 106 Tpt Coy went there one Saturday night to a dance and it was grim, the RSM was a real swine, the best part of the evening was as we were leaving in a truck he ran after us because he thought we had a German NAAFI girl in with us,he was right .
That unit I believe was a kind of reception centre for new recruits from the UK, and they were treated a lot worse than we ever had in basic in the RASC, we reckoned it was to make them mean and miserable out on the street.I don,t think it worked though,we would always get a lift back from town on a Saturday night in the back of the town patrol 3/4 ton to get us to Catterick Barracks just before the magic hour of 23.00.

| I was with HQ 1 Corps RMP based in Bad Rothenfelde from April 1953. We moved to Ripon Barracks, Bielefeld in October that year. The RSM was Fred Davies recently arrived from 227 Pro.Coy.Trieste and was hated by the lads for his petty bullying. HQ staff were then made up of 95% NS men, so you can imagine how we all felt. The new CO that had arrived with Fred in November 1952 was an Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders captain who had done a police training course and was promoted to Major and seconded to RMP. Hard as nails he was and Fred was just what he wanted in a RSM! The discipline was strict at Ripon-but the guys let the CO down whilst on an exercise in January 1954 when they all but mutinied over the winter conditions and caused the whole company to be returned! This event didn't please the Provost Marshal nor Div. Commander at all. No ation was taken against the CO or anyone else. But they all got the message! Three months later I was on my way to to 156 Pro. Coy. in Colchester to finish my NS! | |

Your welcome I live about 20 miles away . My father-in-law says that it was a massive camp in the war and the soldiers went there prior to being sent overseas
