In a building in The Hague during the German occupation a large Telephonzentrale was installed. After the liberation Canadian Forces used this installation. In 1946 it was demolished. On a wall in this building (address: Plein 24) a map was found. At the top the BAOR is mentioned. Who can tell me somthing about this map?

I suppose it was a map showing the layout of units and stuff in the British Army Of the Rhein, maybe some of the Canadian gus on here can shed more light.

Could be a reference to the first BAOR from Mar 1919 to the disbandment 1929

Hi Jim

It was just a thought reading ambachtsheer's post the wall was demolished in 1946 and the map found

The Canadian Forces from Holland and Germany went home Jun 45 except for the newly formed 3rd Canadian Infantry Division CAOF who moved from Holland to Bad Zwischenahn North Germany in Jul 45...all this happen before the new BAOR was formed 25 Aug 1945...but could be wrong!

Cheers
Steve

At this stage it is difficult to speculate exactly what the map depicted.

My guess is that the building was originally part of the German Military Telephone Command System for Occupied Holland and was adapted for use by the Canadians after the German Surrender in May 1945.

The Canadian Government post war plans were based on the premis that the majority of their Citizen Army should be demoblised and return to their homeland as quickly as possible. For that reason the Canadian presence in the British Zone of Occupation of Germany was relatively small and short duration. The majority of the Canadian 1st Army concentrated in Holland awaiting transport (shipping) home and the last Canadians had left by early Summer 1946. The former dedicated German telephone system would have been very useful therefore in maintaining a quick and dedicated communication system to all Canadian units scattered throughout Holland.

The map (wall display) therefore was probably of German origin but adapted by the Canadians to meet their needs. BAOR was probably an overprint to show those areas of Germany close to the Dutch border now under British control.

I too await with interest any comments by our Canadian contributors
