| As a matter of interest when did the Active Service designation change to Home Posting for BAOR .. when I arrived in BAOR in January 1952 I can clearly recall it being On Active Service. Charge sheets AF 252 stated that '12345678 Signalman Bloggs, J. is charged subject to good order and military discipline under Section 40 of Kings Regulations that whilst on Active Service he did tell the Orderly Corporal to go Piss up a Rope' .. I positive about this .. I think ..

Len (Ciphers) The main question is, " did he piss up a rope"? Don't know how you could hurt the Orderly Cpl's feelings. Ahh, youth, so unfeeling....

| I don't know about Orderly Dog's feelings, but being a bit of a smart ass myself I completely forgot about the power of a Clerk. I had occasion to put one of the Sqn Clerks on a fizzer .. as I was in the Sqn Office writing up the charge I saw that I was up for guard commander, I asked the Sqn Office Cpl how come as I had only just come off guard a couple of days before. 'Its the new rota we have drawn up' he said waving it at me. I casually looked at it and said 'where's your name Cpl Bradley'. 'I don't do duties I'm the Sqn Clerk'. About a week later when he was performing his first guard commander duty (her, hee), he banged on my billet door just after 11pm and said 'put your lights out inside'.
'Fxxk off brown nose'
... in that he 2256XXXX Cpl Payne. L, whilst on Active Service (Korea) is charged under Section 40 of the Army Act with conduct contrary to good order and military discipline told the Guard Commander 'to go forth and multiply' ... Severely Reprimanded. ... Moral, leave the bloody Sqn Clerks alone.

Many thanks for your response. I have fired off an email to the German Staff College for any info. Remember wandering around the City Centre then, there was a branch of Woolworth there and I purchased a very special pair of wedge shaped soled shoes costing DM48 - around £4 then. I wore them unti they fell apart after about 15 years (miser).

| It seems RN ratings do not have a pocket for guidance of placing medal ribbons on their uniforms. Officers however do but seem to have a larger lapel than Army/RAF. Still a good question & I await the answer with interest.

Just a thought.
Didn't NATO dish out a medal or two for the Balkans ?
Perhaps they could be persuaded to do a similar one for BAOR, they must have a few buckshee ones lying about.

| Brum,
Am I right in thinking that NATO issued a medal for those countries who participated in that particular conflict. Whereas there were not any various countries involved in service to the British Army of the Rhine. However, various countries did serve NATO against any such Soviet threat. Two different slices of the cake.

Jimsigs1 Hi all, Does the General Service Medal 1918-1962 cover everyone who served anywhere during those years or not? In BAOR in the early years the Russian threat was real In 1952 my unit spent 6 weeks in Belgium preparing NATO stores depots, was that service with NATO BAOR, they will get a medal when there are only a few left, wont be me Tony RE

| Keith,
Think this is the medal you have in your possession, but its only a commemerative medal and officially not allowed to be worn with other Campaign/Service medals. The suppliers of these types of medals have found a gap in the market for collectors and those seeking some sort of recognition for service in places served, where no official medal was issued.
