| Further to my time in Hamburg attending my B11 Radio Ops Course, I cannot remember the barracks but all I can remember is we caught a small train from Altona to Blankanese. Can anyone place these barracks.

| Jimsigs 1 it could have been the von Clausewitz Kaserne, which is now home to the German Staff College, it is situated in Hamburg-Blankenese. | |

| Shelldrake,
Many thanks for your response. I have fired off an email to the German Staff College for any info. Remember wandering around the City Centre then, there was a branch of Woolworth there and I purchased a very special pair of wedge shaped soled shoes costing DM48 - around £4 then. I wore them unti they fell apart after about 15 years (miser).

| Ah memories
Anybody admit to having the Band leaders Tyrolean hat being rammed on his head in the Zillertal? Amongst howls of laughter from assembled company victim then had to conduct the band in a couple of numbers,( rumour had it that he had to buy a round of drinks to be released)
Jimsigs I and doubtless Steve would be very interested in exactly where you attend your U/grade course in Hamburg (our current thinking is that HQ Hamburg district was in the Blakenese Barracks in the early 50s). Can you remember the name of your host unit?

| JWP,
Re my B2 Course in Hamburg. Been given this some thought. Dive up into the loft and found a copy of my Army Form B2672 (suprise, suprise in finding this).
The date of this course was 25th July 1953 and was published in part 2 Orders No 80/53 at HQ Northern Army Group Signal Regt Herford, where I was was serving at the time.
Now to the Unit, almost sure it was 2 L of C Signal Regiment, Hamburg but cannot find any reference to the barracks other than from memory it was at or near Blankanese. Also remember the instructors wearing the Hamburg District patch on their battledress. consisting of a blue shield with a yellow cross sumounted on the shield.

| Gordon,
I also found that piece of info on the web. But on investigation I found out that Adams barracks was situated North-East of Hamburg at a place called Rahlstedt. Perhaps that is where the HQ of 2 L of C was, not where my Course was located near Blankenese.

Having had a mooch around I notice that Barnes Wallis was briefly in the army at the outbreak of WW1 but when airship production was restarted the War Office was persuaded to release him. It doesn't say which mob he was in but you never know !

| Try The Artist Rifles...
The Artists Rifles is a volunteer regiment of the British Army. Raised in London in 1859 as a volunteer light infantry unit, the regiment saw active service during the Boer Wars and World War I, earning a number of battle honours; however, it did not serve outside of Britain during World War II, as it was used as an officer training unit at that time and disbanded in 1945. In 1947 it was re-established to resurrect the Special Air Service Regiment.] Today, the full title of the Regiment is 21 Special Air Service Regiment

Time spent in reconnaissance is never wasted. all my visits were on duty.
In the mid 60s my then Minden based unit sent a number of detachments to Rheinsehlen Camp throughout the summer to provide EME support to other units exercising in the area
SOP was weekend r and r in Hamburg with yours truly riding shot gun. The Zillertal was automatically first port of call for a few alcoholic warmers into the bank. One lively visit involved a small group of RCEME militia, mainly from the prairie provinces, some saw life in the raw for the first time.
PS Did other units have an unofficial arrangement with the local police whereby the vehicle and key was left in the police station yard? Only condition was nominated driver had to prove he was sober before the ignition key was handed back.

| I wonder if some sort of medal might be awarded for service in BAOR when the Army finally pulls out. I know it wasn't 'WOAS' but it would be a token of recognition. Now her's a thought, if the government couldn't afford it then perhaps Angela (Der chancellor) might throw some money into the hat - perish the thought. I'm now under the dining room table (the Morrison shelter to some of you older ones), wearing a helmet and expecting a barrage of bad fruit & veg.
