| Having seen photos of demolition taking place at Belfast Bks. (Osnabruk) I was wondering whether Buller Bks. (Munster) and Maresfield Bks. (Herford) still exist/ Also (totally different subject.) Was there ever any truth to the rumour that army tea was "spiked" with bromide? | |

| when the tea or whatever it was came out of the tea urn , it always left a thick brown scummy substance floating on top, all the acc slopjockeys insisted it was bromide , most of us believed it to be blanco remover , funny enough we never got the muck in naafi tea, it was just as well as tea in the naafi cost 3d a cup. ginger | |

| More likely it was just the crap tea the army bought. My missus worked in the tea tasting department of one of the big tea companies and the "sweepings" always got sold as the cheapest. It also used to go to HM Prisons but the inmates complained so they had to give them a better quality tea. Poor lambs! | |

| You are probably right. In the same way that some people think they are getting quality meat in their bag of 40 sausages for £1.50 in Farmfoods. | |

| Away with all this kerfuffle about bromide in the tea ! What is bromide anyway ? I tell yer wot pal, it didn't work. We had a regiment running around with white sticks and hairy palms to prove it. I remember it coming up on Pt 1 Orders. "Boxing gloves WILL be worn by all living in personnel !" I notice our resident, Shrewsbury - based chef, is keeping very schtum on the subject, by the way.

| Encyclopedia says ...
Rumours that the British Army put the 19th century anticonvulsant and sedative potassium bromide in soldiers' tea during World War II to damp soldiers' lust appears to be an urban myth. Given the long half-life of the drug in the body, a mildly sedated army would be unlikely to be an effective fighting force. A similar belief appears to exist in the United States about saltpeter in army coffee or in Russia about potassium bromide in army food.
