I think we may be close here see what you think Very Happy Roberts Barracks Osnabruck

I must say, before the wheels finally come off this one, I was ready to swear that the first picture was taken in Assaye bks, Nienburg.
The glass wall in the background looks very like the cookhouse that we used.
The second picture blew that idea out of the water however !

I notice that the barrack square is awash with large puddles after presumably a heavy downpour.
Looks like the building and levelling of the parade ground was prepared in good old 'Jerry' fashion.
Probably the beginning of a sink hole developing.

Having been following the post re 'spot the barracks' I would say that it is Wyvern Barracks in Luneburg, I was there April 1952 until Autumn 1954, and the large pic shows what I believe is 1st Bn Royal Hamps Regt on a generals parade, at the top RH of pic is showing the small 'assault' course to the left of the very large Gym, not shown, the building top Left is of HQ coy barracks for the Band, on parade, along with HQ coy stores, and the building to the left of that is of barracks for A and B coys.

The barrack square was only half tarmacked, the other half was dusty shingle, there was always a couple of squaddies who had been reported sick in order that they could polish the dust of the boots once we got back to the tarmac.

At the back of the 'dais' was the cookhouse and the Naafi which was close to the road leading from the town to the RAF station further on.

Hi Steve, both pics show the large glass fronted Gym with the low buildings in the background being the backs of the MT lines, formerly the stable blocks, in the shape of a horseshoe.

Being Ex-German cavalry barracks the centre of the horseshoe was a very large open air training ring with an indoor area for bad weather.

Beyond the boundaries of the stable blocks was a very large civilian allotment area with sand dunes and forest beyond that, but from looking at Google maps everything from the edge of the square outwards has been demolished Gym, stables and all!!

Seeing these pics has certainly brought back some memories.

Thanks Ted

Myself and JPW are researching the early days of BAOR, Wyvern Barracks formally Cavalry Kaserne was large and able to hold two regiments, hope to soon publish a list of regiments who were there, along with the other barracks in Lüneburg in the late 1940s, it appears there were four in the town plus the airfield, a large garrison so very suitable for the British Army of Occupation

This link is an aerial view of what was Wyvern barracks, http://www.rootschat.com/links/01fi0/ the square with the parked cars was our barracks and square, the buildings in the square to the right was Officers mess and quarters, the furthest right housed the 8th Irish Hussars.

There was a smaller barracks between us and the town in which was 109 Coy RASC, I had to collect supplies from them in my last few months as Sgts Mess barman, when the Bn was in the middle of the move to UK and then on to Malaya, at the time of their embarkation, Dec 18th 1953, I only had a couple of months to do, any one who had betwen 3-6 months were transferred to other units.

Your map shows the Brigade HQ's and military hospital in the extreme L/H bottom corner it also shows the Ilmenau river with its 'S' bend opposite the barracks.

This link is for the Google map today https://goo.gl/tDSYV4 with it showing the site as now being the Luneburg University, the 'S' bend for the Ilmenau river pinpoints it exactly.

The Wyvern barracks are obvious, and I believe the small buildings shown to the left of Wyvern was the barracks of 109 Coy RASC and the funny shaped piece of ground top right was the RAF barracks, they had a very nice little cinema there, it made a change from the local AKC Globe in the town, hope this helps, I don't know of any other.
