Prince Harry, although on the posted strength of an AAC Regiment, has not yet been invited to transfer to their permanent cadre of qualified pilots, he is therefore correctly dressed
Jimsigs The Academy Sergeant Major would doubtless be proud of Prince Harry's turnout however the correct abbreviation for the former's appointment is AcSM. ASM is the abbreviation for Artificer Sergeant Major, a REME WO1 appointment

| i also joined the AAC the long way around, ( on ERE posting from my parent regt the15/19H ) any one attatched to the AAC wore the cambridge blue beret. any one ( officer or soldier ) can apply to become aircrew and continue to wear the insignia of their parent regiment.since 1973 the AAC have been a direct entry unit. ( hope that makes sense) | |

Just goes to show that so far as the British Army goes there is no standard issue uniform (and the General Staff are the worst offenders in adding variations (claiming Regimental tradition))

Thanks for that. A perfect insight into what really happened. I must say I have again been educated in my old age. You learn something new every day. Of course you have served in that part of the world so you would have know the history etc.

| Les, I'm not really worried one way or another regarding 'the correct dress' etc. You and the rest of the guys have come across all sorts of dress and their regulations in the course of our travels. So long as it is smart and does justice to the Regiment/Arm of service then no harm is done. It does seem to be those with power are the worse offenders. Look at Monty with his two badges. Bet the Glosters were a bit peeved. | |

| dandc,
I was only drawing the conclusion that only the Glosters wore two badges and Monty was really out of order with his two. Anyway, they say he did it to raise the morale. He also wore an Australian type hat with many badges on it.

| I know Dandc, anyway chum I once tried for the AAC back in 1963 (that awful winter). Reported to Biggin Hill for the initial tests, passed those and two days later off to Middle Wallop for further tests. Didn't get through those but never mind I had a go. | |
