Len (Ciphers) More than likely Len. One thing you can count on in Canadian politics, they not only scrape the bottom of the barrel. They are the bottom of the barrel.

| My tipple came about by winning third prize in a squadron raffle one night ... A drink I enjoy even today Myers Rum... In the orginal post on page one that Brandy sold in the Naafi JRC was Dujardin. The better quality Brandy was of course Asbach Uralt. Surprised no one has mentioned Apfel Korn loverly drink. The name of the local Brewery in the town of Minden I have forgot probably something like Weser Pils. On exercise or when I dropped a clanger at work the cheaper punishment was to purchase several golden handbags pils or export did not matter so long as Herforder was written on the bottles.... | |

| There was a brandy which was called something like Desroches. I don't think it was very popular though. | |

Your Apfelkorn was a variation of my Schwarzkorn
Brum
Agree with you that Desroche came into the category of "gut rot" and was best left well alone

| Hi there, Asbach and coke was a big favourite in my regt. in the 80's. Aldi rocket fuel and Herforder pils for exercise, with cherry brandy of course !! Desjardin was the alternative brandy....... Good beers on tap were: Warstiener (the queen of beers) Veltins Krombacher Lindener Favourites in the Naafi were: Tennents lager (with the birds on the cans) McEwans export. Great times....... atb pinky HUSSAR | |

Slightly better piss I agree Gordon. Someone is showing their age with the lasses on the Tennents cans too. Who the hell made 'tartan' ? It was so rubbish, we had to put a drop of lemonade on the top to kill the 'je ne sais quoi' . Tasted like a direct pipe from the sewers.

| Pinky mentioned Krombacher. There's a cafe here that sells it, I had a pint yesterday, in a long, tall glass. Aaah ! Tartan ? Brewed by Mc Ewans, wasn't it ? | |

The problem we have here, and has cropped up often before, is that subcribers are not displaying their AGE ! Jim, in 1960 we had access to cans of lager embellished with pictures of scantily clad temptresses, the NAAFI didn't stock such stuff, it was purchased from local sources. Our NAAFI in Nienburg, in those days sold Lindener and Watney's Brahn Ale. End of Mission !

The NAAFI bars hardly got used when I was in in the 70s at Hohne. The squadron bars got all the trade. Sometimes there was only the bloody canteen cowboy in there ! Have we got any 'canteen cowboys' in here ?

I recall one night in Nienburg, (Barker Bks), in the NAAFI canteen, we all got mutinous. God knows why.
The Canteen Cowboy rang 10 HUSSARS guardroom and the Orderly Officer, (a WO2) duly arrived. Such was his bearing, and tone of voice, as soon as he ordered us out of the place we leaped out of the windows to get away.
I wish I could be endowed with that gift.

| I recall one evening in the NAAFI Bar in Colchester (not BAOR) the Black Watch decided to pay a visit. As you can imagine the ensuing frivolities soon got out of hand, a quick phone call to the BW Guardroom, the ROO arrives, pumps a few Andrew Mitchells into them, falls them in outside and marches them the 3 or 4 miles back to barracks - job done! (I was ROS - Shelldrake aged 66 and a quarter) | |

| IIRC there was a drink called Persico that was taken off sale in the 70's . Something to do with the drinkers of said Persico getting brain damage , that would explain a lot of nutty squaddies back then. Another I remember was called Samba.... Vodka & Grapefruit juice, fecking gopping stuff couldn't even get rid of it when I took it home on leave to Jockland. Tried Ratzputz once , never again , feckin horrid stuff . Never tried Goldschlager . I have a bottle and a half of Asbach and in the freezer is a litre bottle of Jaegermeister bought in Germany in 2007 and only used on very special occasions and I think there's a bottle of Apfelkorn in the beer fridge . Bob aged 54 and a bit | |

| When I had reached a certain stage in my drinking in Mikkies bar in Osnabruck, she used to bring me a tot of some green stuff called (I think) Escorial. Can't really remember what it tasted like by then! Ido remember that we used to treat the "Sprogs" to a Ratzeputz and tell them to down it in one. Happy nights (I think.) | |

| Well most of the guys around our place, if not drinking off camp would stick to things like carlsberg and amstel, I do remember at one stage there was a run on Dimple Whisky, seem to remember it was as much for the bottle as the contents, think it, was used for a money box and a table lamp | |

| In Buende we passed our weekly bottle to the MT L/Cpl which he sold along with many cigges to the natives. He had a Renault Dauphine white sportscar. The man would go far. His wife was a German Professor. The Officers had at best beat-up-hillman/Jags. Ho Ho Ho. | |
