Warrant Officer Class III (Troop Sergeant-. Major) was introduced early in WWII and wore the Large Crown, while WOII's wore the Crown in Wreath. The rank was obsolite by 1945, and in 1946 WOII CSM/SSM''s started to wear the Large Crown and WOII RQMS etc wore the Crown in Wreath.

Prior to 1965 the RAOC had WO1 Conductors and WO1 Sub-Conductors, and the RASC had WO1 Staff Sargeant Major, First Class, and WO1 Staff Sargeant Majors (SSM)

In 1965 and the splitting of the RASC between the RCT & RAOC all SSM's Ist Class & SSM's which were a Supply Appountmrnt went to the RAOC

In 1969 the Appointments were rationalised, and all SSM st Class became Conductors RAOC, and all Sub-Conductors became Staff Sergeant Majors RAOC.

Like Jim I was a WO1 SSM, but my farther was a WO1 Sub-Conductor.

Conductors RAOC which is an appountment are only selected from WO1 SSM's and not WO1's who were RSM (aka Regimental WO1's)

But as in all things military there were exceptions, and the Chief WO1 instructor at the School of Ordnance [now Logistics] at Deepcut could be an RD/MTI [as QM WO's were not a Storeman Trade beleave it or not in the RAOC but RD/MTI] and hold the appointment of SSM, and be selected as a Conductor, as did Charlie White in 1993 and later went on to be Corps RSM of the RLC, the only WO1 to hold all 3 appointments!

Phil - Sir

As newly promoted to cpl I find I have also been transferred from RE to REME I don't think the latter corps members would appreciate having a Sapper in their midst. Is it possible to transfer me back into Royal Engineers please?
Also is it possible for me to upload an avatar showing a Berlin patch (red circle with Berlin over the top) or do I have to earn that privilege by further promotion?

Permission to dismiss Sir

It appears we are stuck with what we have depending on how many messages we have posted...I have now reached RE Major and do not wish to rise any further...regarding avatars it seems you can upload what you wish cheers

"My eyes are dim I cannot see, I have not brought my specs with me......"
I understand the manner in which the graphics are set up now, having re-read the Standing Orders.
Now if somebody had a grandchild with a graphics application on their computer, I am sure they would be able to knock up some graphics which split the rank from the Unit, in about 0 seconds flat.........

I thought it was only youngsters who could do magic like that Gordon. You must be a lot younger than your age states.

Now all that is needed is an insignia for every possible unit that served in BAOR. I wonder how many hundred that would be.

Mike_2817,

Intersting, the rank of WOIII. My late Dad was a WOIII but was called a PSM (Platoon Sergeant Major) This was in Eritrea 1940-1 whilst he was serving with the 1st Bn Worcestershire Regt. He then was promoted to a war time commission as a Lt.

Gordon,

Found it and here is my 'work of art' Of all the flashes I worn on my uniform sleeve during my service, this one invokes lots of memories for me as it was my real first time overseas posting and things were really buzzing out there then, even although it was the autumn of the Commonwealth Divison etc.
Once again thanks for your pointing me in the right direction Gordon.
