| No, I'll stick to my old SLR. I know what I am doing especially if I have to fumble in the dark. But on reflection only want to put him out of his misery onto the back benches where he belongs. Don't get me going on the little French fella !!!!

| Last time I met Ron Knight was in 1971 at Catterick. He had just taken over as RSM 8/24 Signal Regiments (having just amalgamated) from an RSM who had been reduced to the rank of SSgt. (don't ask me what for). Ron was super smart in his Service dress with Sam Brown etc. That's my last memory of him.

| You nosey lot. I think it was a Sgt's mess misdemeanure but don't have any facts. I remember coming into the Sgt's mess one day early for tea or lunch break, seeing this SSgt sat in the anti-room reading a newspaper. We nodded but no words were spoken. I noticed his No 2 dress was rather new as were the stripes & crown. Obviously the change of uniform was due to his previous tunic would have had patch pockets WO1/Officer style. He was merely waiting in transit for an onward posting. Didn't see him again and that was that. All of this happened around 1971 ish. Now you all know as much as I do.

| That's quite a drop to take, can't imagine many soldiering on after that, mind I did have a run in with a REME Ssgt, had to have him locked up, don't know what the final outcome was in that case | |

| I remember being posted to 51 Lorried Inf Bde in Tel el Kebir 1955 as Tp Sgt. Shortly after this, I had to go down to the MCE Moascar to collect the former Troop Sgt who had just served time after a court martial had reduced him to the ranks etc.
Talk about someone being brainwashed , he shot out of the building to the bark of a prison warder Sgt's words of commanding, marking time etc and climbed into my landrover .
I then had to take him down to 1 Div Sig Regt in Fayid and hand him over to the RSM for his 'Zombey Troop' On the way down I calmed this poor fellow by giving him a fag etc. I was 21 and he was nearer 40.
So there was a Sgt busted and served time - the crime, repeatedly being drunk and disorderly.

| Unfortunately this Ssgt was not done for Drink, much much more serious, something that I believe would have got him about 10yrs if found guilty, always wonder when you never hear any more about the case | |

| Don't wish to dwell on the macabre at this time of year but, I recall whilst serving in Lippstadt, a Cpl from 22 Sigs being given a life Sentence in a German prison for murder.

| And yet that actor, Leslie Grantham, was it? (Dirty Den in East Enders). He murdered a German taxi driver and only served a few years.
This all sounds very unfair to me.

| How about this one and it happened in BAOR - The Sgt Emmet Dunn murder case. The details can be found at www.36regimentra.org.uk/id40.htmI remember the case in around 1953 but the actual trial took place in 1955. I was in the Middle East by then and don't really remember reading about the outcome. Shouls be of interest to all you REME types. Jimsigs1 | |
