| Not bothered at all either way, thing that annoys me is people who get their medals when they are not near the action, and are just in theatre to get the medal to add to their collection, just to make their uniform look better | |

| As i have said before...Why should someone sitting in a secure compound on the largest RAF base in the world get the same medal as the guy dodging bullets in the malay jungle.Talk about embarassing/ |

| Too right, lots of those that you see with a string of medals have not earned them, to my mind therefore it devalues the medals EARNED by our soldiers, as you say dodging bullets | |

| So this BAOR debate concluded. The medal is commerative, and is really a waste of time. Originally said, i was asking about it. My mate(an older mate) about 60 i a mere 39, he served in baor hohne i believe in the 70's. Royal Scots draggoons, he wears his??
But medals are too be earned, and although some exercises where tough going in the german winter, it is not a war/conflict or peacekeeping. The cold war that never maturalised, so therefore topic concluded!

| Medals, Medals & more medals.
I had a quick look up to see what the definition of a medal is and it appears that its a visual form of recognition for athletic, military, scientific, academic, or various other achievements. So I suppose they come under the heading of : 1. To earn, individually or collectively. 2. Being in a certain location 3. Belonging to an organisation etc 4. Anniversary awards
So, their merit is all things to some people and nothing to the rest. Depends what value is placed upon a medal. Personally, I value in order : 1. Bravery awards 2. Other decorations 3 Service awards 4. Campaign medals 5. Anniversary awards
As to the rest, I leave that to the individual. If they want to purchase these themselves then thats up to them but not for me.
I'll now shut up and wear my 3 with pride but withou any speacial distinction.
An ex Scallie

| I got the Duke of Edinburgh's Award (Bronze) when I was in Boys.
It was for showing backbone, British Spirit, and being a thoroughly good chap.
Those sentiments have remained with me to this day.
I now apply those values to my life in retirement.
A curved backbone, frequent libations of British Spirit (Whisky), and still a decent sort of chap, despite everything.
A medal for that ?
Shove it !

What happened to the silver and gold??? Our chappies wore the award on the left sleeve, on a background of the company colour. |

Our chappies wore the award on the left sleeve, on a background of the company colour. I wasn't in Boys long enough to progress beyond the Bronze. When my son got the Gold he went down to London to get it from Phil the Greek himself. | |

| Shelldrake, Jimsigs1, Les, Brum, et al Chasing the thread further, I hope, but with some reservation because of my lack of understanding of Brit humour, I also had a casual meeting with another Royal persona, HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. It took place on 23 Oct 1969 at London, Ont when HRH presented new Queens Colours to the 1st and 3rd battalions of the Royal Canadian Regiment. It was an honour for my Regiment, 21 Field Artillery Regt RCA(M), to be selected to fire the 21 gun Royal Salute (one troop of 4-105mm howitzers).1st and3rd Battalions of the Royal Canadian Regiment. HRH, wearing the blue dress uniform of the RCR, is shown arriving at London, Ont airport. Greeting him is Lt Col Tom Lawson honorary colonel of 3RCR https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=74925d9590&view=audio&msgs=1343d34f89ab28a0&attid=0.1&zwAs you listen to the general Salute fit in the following ditty: " The RCR refuse to fight unless their brass is shining bright" | |
