What was the strength of BAOR after the war? I am researching A/Capt Graham Budge 2nd Bn Black Watch who was in Berlin near the end of the war and afterwards. He played rugby for Scotland and the Lions in 1950.

Was BAOR sport, particularly rugby, popular after the war, enough to maintain skills and fitness?

There are some books on BAOR but not sure if they will mention sport.

Welcome

Impossible to give a number of personnel in 21 Army Group later BAOR at the end of WW2, the British Army arrived in Berlin sometime after the Victory in Europe Day (8 May 45), see https://britisharmyingermany.com/british-troops-berlin

The 2nd Battalion Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) were in India at this time and they merged with the 1st Battalion at Glamorgan Barracks Duisburg on 13 Jul 48, being part of 6th (Highland) Infantry Brigade of 2nd Infantry Division, however they did get to Berlin in Apr 50

Hope this helps

Thanks. Family have told me he served in North Africa, Italy, Greece and finished off in Berlin.

BTW were Officers 'demobbed' or was there another term?

I'm off to the Black Watch Museum soon to do some more research
