Rejoining this net I notice a certain uppityness in the ranks of the junior regiments.
I suspect, Sheldrake, that they've noticed how thinned our ranks are and thought they'd try their luck.
Having glanced at the news item on the rehearsal for Thatcher's funeral I will just say that , without the Gunners, The Iron Lady's coffin would be getting transported in a ................., (enter as appropriate).

Boozer in Fally.

Bit of a long shot but does anybody remember the Feldschlossen pub from the mid 70`s?

I`ve seen some pics of a place called the "Copper Kettle" run by a guy called John Lacey for a while and it looks very like it.

Could it have been renamed sometime?

Other drinking establishments of that era were:

The Ratskellar (Run by Forte who also had a minicab business)

The Amstof

The Lowenbrau

The Ruckself (Rucksack)

The Weehouse (already mentioned)

Telymech the 'Copper Kettle' is situated opposite and just up to the left of what was the Lowenbrau, which is/was still a restaurant serving Balkan type food. The Feldschlossen is now called the La trattoria:- http://la-trattoria.de/Bildergalerie/

Thanks very much for the info soprano54. Very Happy . They grey matter has got a little confused there.

I mainly went to the Feldy for nights out and then on to the Ratskeller when it closed. Embarassed

I was only in Fally for around 18 months and never went back except briefly when I was on the Clansman installation team in 79/80 and stayed in the transit block at Wessex. I think the Coldstream Guards were there then.

Went into town one night and saw Rita and Sid at the [Ratskeller] renamed to the Friendship.

Rita was the waitress at the Feldy and Sid was 42 Heavy in 73/74 and was more than surprised to find them both running it.

Always a pleasure.................never a chore! To be honest I can't remember the Ratskeller nor the Rucksack, probably named differently during my time in 'Falling-Bar-Stool' Dec 75 - Jul 76, Jul 92 - Sep 02, Jun 05 - Jul 07. See pic for Lowenbrau and Feldy LOCSTATS:-

Thanks again. Very Happy Don`t know how I could confuse the Feldy with the Copper Kettle as the Feldy is obviously much bigger.

Ta for the map. Gets everything in perspective now.

The Ratskeller (as the name suggests) was just up the road from the Rathaus. Don`t think it was very popular as it was a bit bit of a dive even by squaddies standards and never went in much before 2.00 AM.

I see the Lowenbrau is now known as the Hotel Karpinski.

I think 'The Ratskeller' is now called 'Die Tageszieten':- http://www.restaurant-die-tageszeiten.de/, take a look at the pics on their site and it's just up from where the old Rathaus was. What was the 'Lowenbrau' has always been part of a hotel, the entrance to the restaurant is under the white awning!

I cant remember whether this story was Fally or Hohne, but it was a cavalry regiment:

In about...1982 a mate and me were dispatched to collect some silver from an officers mess (Royal Hussars?14/20H?) and take it to the officers mess at Bournemouth barracks Soltau. On arrival at the Hussars mess in Fally or Hohne, the first thing we saw was a green MG sports car smashed into the front doors! We eventually found our way to the tradesmans entrance and after finding a steward we asked about the car smashed through the front doors, then noticed lots of other damage, broken doors, chairs etc. The steward said they [Officers] had a party last evening and were playing polo, the chairs doubled as polo ponies! We asked who was going to pay for all the damage, the steward said the young gentlmen take it in turns at paying for the damage. He said one of them will simply write out a cheque!

It must have been the Royal Hussars as they were in Lumsden Bks 'Falling-Bar-Stool' 1981-88! It would have been put down to high spirits seeing as they were orficers but vandalism/criminal damge if ORs were involved! Have you heard the dit about the Officers Mess of the Light Dragoons over at Schloss Bredebeck at Hohne, that involved a Thunderflash, a dustbin of flour and some drunken orficers?

My only stay in Fallingbostel waw in 1961, when I was attached to the 16th/5th Lancers. We overnighted there in an old German barrack block. We slept on straw palliasses. Very uncomfortable, I can assure you. Next day we went on to Soltau. Happy days!

Following on from Telymech's post on local hostelries:

I served in Fally from early 1977 to June 1979 & can remember the Zum Feldsloschen very well. I vaguely remember somewhere called Mr Drinks opening up in the town around 1978-79, but I don't think it stayed open that long. I have never been able to find any references to it on any of the various forums..
I also used to go to a bar in Oerbke we called the Alten Post. Haven't got a clue if that was it's real name or not, but quite a few of the guys from 16 Sqn used to get down there for happy hours etc. Not a bad little pub if I remember correctly.

There is an old pic of the Feldschlossen in one of my posts above, the last time I was in 'Falling-Bar-Stool' the building was being used by an insurance firm. You're correct the bar down in Oerbke was called the Alten Post and was later a disco come nightclub called 'Cha Cha's'!

Thanks Soprano, I saw your old photo. Do you have a date on it? Loving the horses working - not a sight you get to see now. Ta for the confirmation on the Alten Post. Along with the Feldschlossen it was one of my regular haunts. A nightclub called 'Cha Cha's though, seriously...?

From what I can remember, Mr Drinks was across the road to the right from the Feldschlossen so looking on Google Earth, (if my memory & geography is correct), it could have been where Aldi's is now. I never went back after 1979 & like everywhere else, so much has changed.

I'll never forget the warehouses at the railhead just up from the autobahn bridge. While I was there, a rumour was going round that they were used to store items taken from the concentration camp victims during the war. Obviously they were all haunted & if you listened you could hear the voices of the victims wailing & calling out. Personally, I never heard a thing & I think it was a story invented to scare inebriated pad's wives on the long walk home from the squadron bar.
Talking of the autobahn bridge, do the Poliezi still sit there waiting to catch unwary squaddies speeding? The buggers caught me in 1977. Never again. Just after that in 1978, there used to be a sign on the barracks side of the bridge that was hidden in the grass & would be put up when the coppers were there, telling everyone to slow down. I don't think the coppers ever clocked it was there.
