MEDAL FOR BAOR TROOPS

Am I right in thinking that NATO issued a medal for those countries who participated in that particular conflict. Whereas there were not any various countries involved in service to the British Army of the Rhine. However, various countries did serve NATO against any such Soviet threat. Two different slices of the cake.

Hi all,

Does the General Service Medal 1918-1962 cover everyone who served anywhere during those years or not?

In BAOR in the early years the Russian threat was real

In 1952 my unit spent 6 weeks in Belgium preparing NATO stores depots, was that service with NATO

BAOR, they will get a medal when there are only a few left, wont be me

I have in my possession a medal you may have interest in supplied by MEDALS & DECORATIONS . Inscribed BRITISH FORCES GERMANY....ARMY 1945-1989 RAF ...on the face and on the back a laurel with no.rank name and years served there .The ribbon is wide blue then black,red yellow then wide blue .I also have a HONG KONG SERVICE MEDAL 1841-1997.

Think this is the medal you have in your possession, but its only a commemerative medal and officially not allowed to be worn with other Campaign/Service medals. The suppliers of these types of medals have found a gap in the market for collectors and those seeking some sort of recognition for service in places served, where no official medal was issued.

BAOR Medal
Cold War Medal
THe Army Medal..RAF and RN have their own.
This one comes with your Corps/Regimental badge on it

The full set plus minatures,Medal bars engraving and mounting will set you back around 500 quid

Then, i should imagine, if you had the brass neck to wear them,you would leave yourself open to a high level of ridicule

I wouldn't be seen dead wearing those. Talking about medals etc, I have as a uniform collector a replica tunic displaying the rank badges and medal ribbons as worn by FM Rommel. Quite a colourful affair correct in all detail. It was just a mad thing I did a couple of years ago, having been taken to his grave by my Sister, who lives near Augsburg - not far from Rommel's home. Silly old bugger arn't I

Got all of the above Gordon, including a Bar to my BFG medal and a MiD for my Cold War Medal. The MiD was awarded for being tied to the back of a Honest John Rocket Launcher during a particularly severe German Winter. I wear them on my PJs, the wife is "Well impressed" as they say, nowadays.

Thanks for your comments on medals .As I have no intention of wearing the aforesaid medals, I only purchased them as a reminder of the places I had served in.PROUD TO BE A VETERAN.

From what I read they had a hard time of it.

He was with the Dorset Regt diring the 1920's and through into the 1930's.

I was born in the Married Quarters of the Dorsets in Dorchester itself when Dad was a Cpl Instructor.
